Don’t.

Yeah……. I don’t have the energy to even fake it. Buy the damn thing…
Re: Holosun AEMS for $250
Don’t know what you’d do with it?
You’d put it on a rifle. Duh.
Don’t have a rifle to put it on? Buy another rifle. Duh.

Let me rephrase, anyone put hands on one of these or have an opinion about it? I've seen some positive reviews but haven't actually seen one.

Make sure you're not getting the cheap version of the AEMS. There's a no-solar and no lens covers version that I'd pass on.
A few of my minions have purchased the upper end one, & I've done the installs & preliminary zeroing. Badass optic that I'm strongly leaning toward purchasing despite owning a perfectly functional Aimpoint PRO.
Has a very clear view, even when looking through the flip-down lens caps, which you can think of using as a windshield wiper - basically giving you the ability to endure two cases of lens goobers before needing to clean anything. It runs on the common-as-dirt 2032 battery, and can run off the solar panel without some of its bells and whistles on ambient light with the battery removed. Covers a lot of bases.

Re: Holosun AEMS for $250
This one doesn’t have solar. With FIFTY THOUSAND hours battery life….who cares?

You may have a point. Replacing a battery every 5.7 years (assuming it never turns off, IE worst case scenario )
IS a pretty large burden.

Re: Holosun AEMS for $250
Not sure I'm a fan of the flip down lens covers. Guess I'd have to see it and look through one with the caps closed.
Re: Holosun AEMS for $250
Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm a fan of the flip up lens covers myself...

Re: Holosun AEMS for $250
They're nice - like you're not looking through anything. Seems to be a little better lens material than the soft plastic we've come to know and loathe for such things.
The flip-down is nice for two reasons - 1. probably better protection than if they're standing up in the sky; 2. if you need to look over the sight for any reason, they aren't in your path. Flip up is generally handier on more traditional hunting rifles where the tabs on the caps are easy to reach from a normal shooting grip, but when you go to the higher sight line of an AR, you're moving a bit anyway and the top of the sight for a flip down is as easy to get to. Like I say though, they're clear enough that I'd leave them in place unless the grime of the world dictates otherwise. Worth noting - it's a feature the "nice" version doesn't have.
As to passing on the option of the solar backup for a battery that "lives forever", I've found the advertised battery life for the similarly-wired handgun sights is typically optimistic, especially if running in auto-adjust brightness control mode, or if you just leave it cranked up after your last sunny day. Crazy as it sounds, the most common reaction to a dead sight isn't to go to the backup irons, but to say, "WAAAAAH! It doesn't work", followed immediately by "Does anyone have an extra battery?" As such, I generally recommend that the Poor Planning Contingent spend the few extra bucks on something that will let them operate in a limited fashion until they can re-juice.

So, how much shorter IS the battery life.
Even if you have to replace it every year or other year... who cares?

And being newly indoctrinated into the ways of pistol optics and having trust issues in general, solar adds another layer of complexity I dont care for. And adds something on the outside what is subject to primate activity. Is solar on the top of the line HSLD operator type sights? Nope. May be a reason for that. A reason that isnt marketing wank. Guy at work has the solar model on a pistol, "I really like it, because I NEVER have to worry about batteries!"
Ummm, what if you need it in the dark and your batteries have taken a poop?
:blankstare:
Replace it annually, and move on.

Solar panels on something that resides in a holster, under a jacket, in a car, or next to the bed? Basically obscured 99% of its life.

Re: Holosun AEMS for $250
Were it me, I would spring for the AEMS with the covers and sollar panel. Not because of the covers and solar, but because it has a donut and dot reticle. With my astigmatism, a 2MOA dot is slower than irons. It's a canted oblate blob. Fine for hallway distances, I suppose, but bad if any distance is added. The donut and dot, OTOH, works for me.

I do not care. I am not going to get battery powered tritium sights...
