10/22 Stock Recommendations

I've got a 10/22 Target model that I've never really found great accuracy in. It's been in timeout for a while as other projects take precedence.

The barrel isn't even close to free floated. I don't know why, but Ruger found it necessary to leave a "groove" of stock up from with the obvious intention of supporting the barrel (see pics). It's even got some half ass looking adhesive in that area.

I know I can take the Dremel to it and achieve free floating, but a better stock altogether might be the preferred route as the factory stock is also pretty tight all down the sides of the barrel.

So, any recommendations? Magpul Hunter? Maybe one of these:

I like the Kinetic you linked. Also like the Magpul Hunter on a 10/22 (hate it on a bolt gun).
I also have one of these that I like on the 10/22.

Got the Magpul stock ordered along with the Volquartzen trigger upgrade kit.

Now I might have to look at a better scope...and rail mount...and rings!

I don’t want to be a damper on the project but the problem might be your barrel. While those tend to be very accurate a bad chamber or just a poorly cut rifling will counter every other upgrade you make to that gun. None of your upgrades is a bad idea, just be careful you don’t spend a pile of money only to find out a barrel swap would have gotten you there.

Current accuracy at 50 yards. Good, not great.

Ok that’s not bad. You tried other ammo? I have a stock Ruger Stainless that is meh about Autumatch and then gives me a ragged hole with Remington Thunderbolts. Imagine my surprise on that one 🤣

Considering that they're hanging a Dana 44 axle off an aluminum receiver originally designed for a lightweight pencil barrel, I would NOT be inclined to free float it.

I would stick with that nice rigid laminate stock, free float all but the last two inches, and shore up or outright replace that front saddle with bedding compound in that last two inches of stock.

I've never bedded a 10/22 action - just looking a photos right now, I'd have to scratch my head about this next bit, but I'd probably also want to figure out how to bed up the rear couple inches of barrel, recoil lug area, and maybe the receiver tang. The ultimate goal is to form a rock solid union that allows ZERO positional shifting between the barrel and your optic.

Another option would be to bed the front of the stock as above with pliable RTV gasket sealer, and bed the stern as above with the harder stuff. I've gotten good mileage on the RTV stuff as a vibration damper between lever action's barrels and mag tubes, and forend bedding on 2-piece stocks.

Easiest way to test if the concept has any merit is to shim the forend tip with business card stock & see what happens.

All that said, I agree with Wambli that your group isn't all that bad. Other ammo may get you there.

Bedding the first couple inches of the breech end of the truck axle supports it plenty. One could read for years on all the methods of pimping and bedding.
Thousands have been built by jackasses in their garage to shoot circles around the so called “target” model 10-22 Ruger offered.

I liked the Magpul X-22 a LOT for the price, but sent mine down the road to upgrade to a KRG Bravo. How much that upgrade will be money well spent is yet to be seen.

My understanding is you CAN bed the action.

Just make sure you use plenty of release agent, and make sure it's everywhere it needs to be.

Everywhere it needs to be. If you mess up and glue the action to the stock, you may need to look for a big chest freezer or something to help you pop it back out.

I like using two part putty for bedding guns instead of the runny crap. A little goes a long way, you can place it in the critical areas and it won’t travel while curing, and with a heavy barreled 10/22 you really don’t have to bed every square inch. I basically dip the whole thing in oil before bedding and the chances of glueing anything to the stock are zero. Just watch for mechanical bonds with recesses, screws and such. There is negligible recoil and probably no barrel harmonics to worry about as it is, so you just have to make sure as Big said that the relationship between the bore/barrel/receiver/scope is stable and that won’t take much bedding.

I’ve tried the putty, wasn’t a huge fan. It’s less mess, but too much in one spot and it props it up funny ways. I’d rather lube up the action and tape off the stock. Let epoxy googe out. Micro balloons or steel powder added helps thicken it up if need be. JB weld end up fairly thick and doesn’t do a bad job.
The Devcon stuff is good, but once you open it the shelf life SUCKS.

Yeah there is a learning curve with the putty but the good news is that a Dremel and sanding drum erases mistakes and ugly stuff in seconds. I don’t bed a lot of stuff beyond the locking lug and 1st inch of barrel so for my needs the putty is good. I wrap a stick in plastic wrap and it’ll last forever.

The Magpul stock does come with an adjustable barrel shim. I doubt I'll use it but it might be worth testing.

Try various ammo in a rimfire? That's crazy!

This Federal stuff says auto match right on the box so it's obviously the best choice.

Sorry I should have assumed you did. But you said you were busy so I was just wondering how far your accuracy testing went.

I got lucky and found some .22 LR ammo from Prime (repackaged Eley) that shoots great in all my .22's. Which is good for me because I bought 10K rounds on clearance.

Don't know about Devcon but on a tip, I started keeping Shoe Goo in the freezer. I get it out day before using and it's always juicy!

(Probably ruin Devcon) 🤔

I can’t remember which of the two parts of the devcon went bad. But I know I was pissed because it was almost $40
