Subsonic 223/556
Anybody else ever handload some? I've looked online and they're ALWAYS out of stock and almost $1.50 a round so I figured I'd try my hand at reloading since I have 3 presses laying around and collecting dust. I did some testing today with Clay's and Unique powders. I can't remember my exact measurements as I have them written down and I'm currently sitting on my lazy ass but I think it was somewhere around 4.9 grains under 69 grain Match Kings getting me right at 1000fps. Not enough to cycle the action but these are just for dickin around in the backyard without pissing off the neighbor. My velocities were tested using my pistol with can installed and they are QUIET, even in my small shop with no ear pro. I'm just curious if anyone else has or does reload this caliber in subs and what powder and weights are you using.

Last time I did I used 55 grain Vmax and trail
boss. Couldn’t tell you the speed. Didn’t mess with them all that much.

Yeah I figured out a load for the 52 grain bullets I have as well. I think I got them to around 1050fps. I figure they have no real purpose other than being able to **** around in city limits without some nosey bastard calling the cops. I did have the pleasure of driving out a bullet that got stuck mid barrel. Apparently anything under 600fps is no bueno, even in a short pistol barrel.

For a subsonic that small, I prefer just using 22LR

A 22 adapter would be the ticket here. I couldn’t see any use a 22 adapter kit would solve to a better degree….. just my dos centavos…..

Unfortunately I had a helluva time getting my form 1 can apart the last time I shot rimfire through it. Things gum up easy when everything is a machinist fit. Hence the 223

I’ve made handloads and shot factory sub ammo for the .223 Rem. It’s done the job needed. But it’s mostly a why.

Mostly just backyard endeavors and the weird factor to be honest. It's something different than busting out the dirty 22lr's and I hardly get to fiddle with my AR platforms.

Hodgdon lists:
55gr Win FMJ 2.195"
Accurate #2, 3.7gr, 1075 fps
Hodgdon Titegroup, 3.6gr, 1065 fps
64gr Sierra TGK, 2.212"
Accurate 5744, 4.7gr, 1045 fps
Accurate #2, 4.6gr, 1082 fps
Hodgdon Titegroup, 4.3gr 1077 fps
77gr Sierra HPBT, 2.230"
Accurate 5744, 5.6gr, 1056 fps
Accurate #2, 5.4gr, 1097 fps
Hodgdon Titegroup, 5.2gr, 1083 fps
Not sure of the availability or cost of those powders, but I dont recall any of them being very bulky and those charge weights seem really low. I have had issues with low case fill loads in the past, so I would be leery of them without knowing the case fill.
