My ridiculous 10/22 build..

Two months and one day ago I started on a build that I didn’t realize was going to be as ridiculous, and awesome, as it turned out. I’ve been wanting to build a 10/22 for a while now. I gave the one I had to my son. I have a Marlin 60 and a Golden 39A. Just didn’t feel right not having a 10/22. I also had in mind, I wanted a light and compact 10/22. Mostly for varmint and pest control around the farm. But, admittedly, it’s a toy…

Started the build in August with an order for a custom carbon fiber barrel from McGowan. 16” barrel, 1/2” threaded for a suppressor. I chose the Bentz chamber… Which I know nothing about. But it seems that’s a “match” 22LR chamber. That barrel got here today.

While waiting for the barrel, I started ordering the rest of the gun. Started with the chassis. Which some jackass, not naming names, pointed out to me. So, I ordered it. The chassis is a lightweight, folding stock model from Grey Birch.

Then, I went on to looking for a receiver and bolt. I started to order both Brownells branded stuff, but had some difficulty getting my order to go through. In the meantime, I found Custom Shooting Technologies. Their CentriX-22 receiver with a match bolt ended up not much more than the Brownells stuff. So I ordered from CST.

With the expensive parts out of the way, I was down to small parts. I ordered a Power Custom Competition Plus trigger kit and their auto bolt release. I also ordered a factory Ruger 10 round mag. I was lucky enough to score an older factory trigger housing from a buddy to put the trigger parts in.

For optic, I was looking for decent quality, and light weight. I went with the Leupold VX Freedom 3-9x40 rimfire scope on Leupold rings.

Today it all came together. The barrel weighs 1 pound, 5 ounces. The complete gun, with empty mag, no suppressor is 5 pounds, 8 ounces. With suppressor, 5 pounds, 11 ounces.

I have a 50 yard range in the dry tank/pond just outside my shop door. First round out of it, brand new, was 1” left and a touch high. After adjusting the scope the wrong way, then coming back, I shot a 3 round group. Well under 1/2” at 50 yards. Made one last adjustment, and it’s done..

The angle. For reference, that suppressor is about 6” long. Folded, sitting on the scale with suppressor, that bench is 20” deep. I ran out of light today by the time I got it together and put a few rounds out of it. I’ll take more pics later.

But, that is a full bull contour, 16” barrel that weighs just over 1 pound..

Thanks. Yet to be seen. The build was fun. Almost entirely aftermarket. The only Ruger parts are the trigger housing and magazine. It all went together REALLY nice… more shooting and testing with more ammo will tell the full story. Sub MOA at 100 yards, maybe…

Interesting. I have just put a deposit on a 10/22. Not as exotic as yours though. It has a hammer forged stainless heavy barrel and laminate stock. Here in England we have to apply for a variation on the Firearms Certificate and as soon as authority comes through I can go get. With shotguns I can just walk in and buy as many as I want and walk out again. Rifles are a bit more complex. I look forward to getting it.

Then of course it will need a thermal scope for the trash pandas and other night critters
Speaking of enabling Sheels has precision primed 22 cases and match bullets so it’s now possible to custom load match 22lr and fine tune the recipe.

And yes. 3 ounces. The down side is, it’s not magnum or 17HMR rated. So I’ll probably have to get another rimfire suppressor.

I did notice it was a bit more finicky to hold still on the bench. It has a full length arca rail machined into the forend. Tripod ready.

Thanks. I think I put around 10 rounds out of it that evening before I ran out of light. I planned to get it back out yesterday evening, but ended up doing chores until dark. I only tried two loads. Both CCI subsonic. I’ll try more out of it, then try 100 yards.

My thermal will be going on it at some point. That evening after I shot it, I damn near walked into a skunk in the dark. By the time I got the gun back out and grabbed a flashlight, I couldn’t find it.

Very cool! I’m sure you’ll enjoy it when you get it. Depending on availability and legalities, I strongly suggest getting a better trigger for it. At the very least, order a Ruger BX trigger. Two pins, remove old trigger housing, install BX trigger and put two pins back in. They are WAY better than the factory triggers, which are horrible. I scored my trigger housing from a buddy who put a BX trigger on his. I believe his, brand new, is breaking at 2 1/4 pounds now. Ruger should just put those triggers in all their 10/22s. But then, they wouldn’t make money selling the BX trigger to replace the horrible factory triggers…

My Power Custom trigger is breaking at 2 pounds. It is adjustable. But has to be disassembled to adjust. So I haven’t messed with it. Just have the over travel screw adjusted for now.
