I just received a package from a friend, a Remington XP 100 that belonged to my late son. He said it was just sitting in his safe and he wouldn't shoot it again. I have lusted for a XP100 since I was a kid reading the Shooter's Bible. It comes with at least 100 pieces of brass and Neck sizing dies. I will need to replace the missing rear sight screws and purchase base. rings and scope. The trigger is already great. Date of manufacture is April 1977.

I have some questions as I've never shot a pistol like this before. I will shoot targets, coyote, and ground hog. Single or split scope base, and what style scope, fixed or variable. I began looking at scope last evening and gloss scopes aren't popular with manufacturers.

I have a, now apparently, discontinued Burris 1 piece mount on mine. Looking at MidwayUSA, this is the only one they have in-stock.

For a handgun with the range of the XP, I prefer variable. All of my others have fixed on them

I STRONGLY recommend Burris Signature ZEE rings. The polymer insert doesn't mar the scope and I've never had a scope slip, even on my hard kicking "hand cannons" (45-70 Contender anyone?)

I'm guessing yours is in 221 Fireball? I don't think Rem started with the other chamberings until later than 1977

Sorry about that, yes 221 Fireball. I have about 100 pieces of brass and a box of factory ammo.

That is freaking awesome. I really want one of those as it is just the kind of weirdness I’m into.

No help on the recommendations- I know nothing about the cartridge or the scope setup. But I want to learn

That's an XP-100 action with a 16.5" PAC-Nor barrel.

Here is a photo of my XP 100, also a fireball, with an old timey Burris 3-9 long eye relief scope. Believe it or not, but this one of the brightest, clearest, and sharpest scopes I own. One thing though, I wish they it on a left hand action. It's awkward to have to switch hands to work the action.

Leupold one piece base?

Yes. The XP only has one hole threaded on the rear of the receiver, so you have to use a one piece scope base. I still have the original iron sights that came with the gun.

Very nice that it found its way home. Interesting pistol and chambering too. Kind of always wanted to try one of those but never really made any effort to acquire one. Hope it's a shooter.

Mine wears an OLD Shilen SS barrel chambered for 7mmIHMSA. It was barrelled back when Shilen installed barrels. The guy that had it built was in the Top 10 in IHMSA and had modified the original stock to his TINY hands. I found an unfinished walnut stock and finished and installed it.

That gun has been in my “one of these days” list for decades.

Neat! Pops has a .221 in his collection. Got a Leupold 2.5-8 EER on it.

I don't recall, but the base and rings are almost certainly Leupold's STD front / windage rear base for the Remington XP and 600, likely purchased on my gun shop employee discount back in the day.

You're locked into fairly light bullets due to the slow twist rate. IIRC, Pop's ended up liking 4227.

Pretty much the majority of my XP's have a EGW picatinny rail with rifle scopes.
The little Fireball is a pretty cool cartridge!

Thanks to Ernie I have a Burris 2x7 and Burris base mounted on the XP 100 and it looks great. A total vintage package. I'm having trouble getting photos from my phone but will post pics later.

My son had two empty shell boxes with load data and I'm not sure which I should start with? I'll be punching paper, coyote and ground hog.

Yotes I’ve shot and have seen shot with Vmax never complained. Likely because they can’t talk, but more importantly was the gaping flesh wound and sploded guts.

I've found that my XP likes the 40gr/w4227 the best. My rifle as well. Lil'gun and CFEBLK are also worth considering. When working up your loads, be careful to watch for any pressure signs. The small case is sensitive to pressure. Watch your tenths!
My state requires use of non-lead for hunting, so I've had to try different powders and loads. Right now I've found a good load using 36 gr. Barnes Varmint Grenade and 13 grs of Lil'Gun. You are going to be amazed at how accurate the XP shoots. Good Luck!
