The twins.

Post by Elk Creek »

Well a few weeks ago I found a Uberti 1885 Highwall in 30-30 Winchester, I had to buy it. I told Sako about the opportunity as well and he thought that would be something worth having as well. So be bought one too, I had the shop order in a third for the shelf. When they came in Sako and I got to pick our own rifles out of the litter. A Highwall in 30wcf has been a grail gun for a long time. I’ve seen a couple over the years but they never worked out until now. Today we shot the twins. I have to say this rifle is WELL WORTH the wait, dang it shoots! I put a Lyman 17a front globe sight and a marbles rear tang on mine Sako has the same front sight on his, but I’ll let him tell you about his. Well did I mention it shoots? You can see in the pictures it groups well. The groups are a progression of moving the sights. I was using Winchester 150grain power point factory ammo. I shanked on round, I can live with that. Dang I’m happy with this rifle!

The round at the 12 o’clock position was from a different rifle.

The 'Twins" are awesome rifles for sure. I didn't get groups as good as Andy's but was handicapped a bit by mismatched sights. I had installed a Lee Shaver Globe front sight with the intention of mounting an old Lyman Tang sight I had but have had issues acquiring the proper screws for it. The factory buckhorn rear just did not play well with the globe front sight. Hopefully to be remedied before the next range trip.
Also got to try out the 300 BO upper I got for Christmas. Ran various loads in bullet weights from 110-180gr without any snags. No Pics, I always forget

Looks like it shoots. I like the crescent butt and most of all the color case-hardening. Needs a scope :D

A Winchester “B” would be cool or a Malcolm scope too. For now I’ll keep the irons.

I dig!
I love that rear sight, but last aperture style sight I peered my peepers through…I may as well have just smeared Vaseline on my eyeball. I’d get the same sight picture.
Yay, old age.

That long barrel helped. I focus on the front sight Ana “lollipop” the target ….

NEEEEEEEAT!

If you guys do a detail teardown and learn how to remove/deactivate the "fly" that automatically drops the hammer to half cock on closing of the action, please share.

My understanding is that Winchester came up with that for the .22 Short Winder Musket and models with set triggers, and Uberti decided to use this nanny safety across the board. It was a deal breaker for me when I considered ordering one in .357 a few years back. Unfortunate - really nice rifles otherwise.
WWJMBD?

I believe we should stand on Ceremony. . . while our friends handcuff the sanctimonious little prick and take him away.

SWEET! Buckhorns can be difficult, but love the globe or Lyman combo sight (https://montanavintagearms.com/product/ ... ont-sight/)
and a tang sight. Most of my lever guns wear them.

My levers except my 1873 SRC wear some form of aperture sight. The levers wear a receiver sight and the single shots have tangs. There are a couple exceptions but I really like aperture sights in whatever form they take.
