Any pipe smokers here? and cigar smokers too 😁

Post by Wambli Ska »

So it’s time for me to take on a new bad habit…. Errrrrrrr, hobby. So my son-in-law suggested pipe smoking. Both of us enjoy good cigars and whiskeys, and partake OFTEN together responsibly. He used to be a pipe smokers and has been going on and on about how much he misses it so I suggested we add it to our list of common interests which is already quite extensive.

So he dug up a few of his old pipes and I just got this beauty shipped to me, probably the first of many since I’ve been told by pipe aficionados that pipes are like guns and I’ll probably never settle for just one.

It’s an Irish pipe made by Peterson, apparently a long established and reputable maker. Beautifully made with gorgeous figured bowl and a nice sterling silver band. I also ordered the appropriate accessories and a selection of tobaccos from a company called J.M. Boswell’s Pipes which has a really good reputation for both their pipes and their tobacco blends. They’ll be here Monday.

I know a few folks here are cigar smokers so I was wondering if any are pipe fans. I know Linefinder is so I’m hopping he’ll chime in. I’d love to start a discussion on recommendations of pipe tobacco AND cigars if you have any favorites and maybe share pointers amongst us for those like me looking to get started.

I’ve been doing some research and apparently successfully smoking a pipe is a little of artwork, kind of like learning to properly smoke a fine cigar, and if done incorrectly it’ll lead to a less than satisfactory experience so if anyone wants to contribute I’ll definitely welcome it.

In the mean time, pipe porn 😎

I tried a pipe for years. I could never get the burn steady yet cool enough. I was always relighting or burning my tongue. No happy medium. For those that get it I bow to your success. I am now a cigar only guy and will never I mean never go back to pipes. Just one man's experience.

I was on a pipe kick for a while. Purchased a few and was gifted a few. For smoking I like a Meerschaun Cob or a Savinelli Bing Crosby pipe.

I gave up cigarettes a looooooooong time ago so no inhaling with cigars or pipes. Cigarettes are a terrible addiction. With cigars and pipes it’s all about the actual taste. And my son and daughter are adamant that the will if closed 🤣

I have cigars down, but then again I smoked my first one when I was 8. Sort of a culture thing for us Caribbean folk.

Now, I had the same experience as you smoking pipes so I gave up on them in my 20s. But, lately I found out that I was just doing it wrong and that a properly smoked pipe is as satisfying as smoke as a good cigar. So as usual with anything I take on I'm on a quest to master pipe smoking, so I’m voraciously reading everything I can find on the subject.

Hopefully my SIL is a good teacher because he swears he’s got it down so we’ll see. Waiting for him to come home so I can get started.

Thanks for the link! Just went there and it seems nice but definitely NOT phone friendly so I’ll look tomorrow when I’m in my MAC. This is fast becoming another money black hole 🤣

BTW for the cigar smokers. SIL and I have been in a quest to try as many Alec Bradley cigars as we can. We ordered some Project 40 on a whim and fell in love with them. The Project 40 is a nice cool mellow smoke that has a lot of nutty and coffee elements. It’s probably my favorite morning cigar with a big cup of Café con Leche. Breakfast of champions.

Since we had that first Project 40 we have tried many of their cigars and every single one of them have been great! My and my SIL’s current favorite is their Prensados. A slightly bolder and more flavorful cigar that never tastes burnt. You can smoke one until your finger burn. Highly recommend them with a glass of your favorite whiskey or rum, neat.

If you haven't already, check out cigar.com
They not only have online sales, but also host forum.
There is loads of cigar info, but also a pipe section. The guys there post so much pipe and tobacco information you can fall into that hole for hours. I haven't logged on there for a while, think I will

I’ll chase you there. Just joined Pipe Smokers Den and lots of good info there and so far the folks seem helpful and welcoming of the FNG.

For cigars give Thompson a look. For military folks they give an extra discount even over the ridiculously great sale prices on EVERY ORDER and always free shipping. I’m pretty sure my SIL has had a few 4 figure months on that site. Every time I get to his house there’s a big Thompson box by the door. He’s building a walk-in humidor at home. Their emails are like crack for us addicts.

I used to, but I've given up smoking. All of my pipes are briar freehands from Denmark. My favorite pipe maker was Ben Wade. I only smoked one tobacco, Wilshire, which I get from the Tinderbox. The link is below if you want to try it.

I don't. Not something I never thought about photographing. Below is a photo of a freehand pipe. They are typically large and very light weight.

"your favorite whiskey or rum, neat."

I used to smoke but quit over 40 years ago. I love relaxing with a good bowl. Now for the real question, where do you find a good sipping rum? That is something I would really enjoy. Another thing that goes well with cigars and pipes is a good Tawny Port or brandy/cognac.

There are some exceptional sipping rums out there. On the “entry level” DonQ XO is hard to beat and is one of my go-to rums for sipping or elevating a mixed cocktail. A classic Mojito made with Dno Q XO will make your head spin. From Venezuela comes Pampero Aniversario, a super smooth rum with a nice molasses aftertaste that is almost too easy to sip. One of the best out there is from Colombia, Dictador 20 is just ridiculously good!

I love Rums because even the best ones have not reached the stupid prices whiskeys have gone to and they are as good and in many cases MUCH better liquor than the premium whiskeys.

I spent a couple of hours last night watching videos on restoring estate pipes. Some of these guys are amazing! Interestingly enough, wife got into it and enjoyed watching them with me. She loves how-to YouTube videos of antique restorations and we’re both big fans of the British show Antiques Workshop so this is right up her alley.

Nope, it’s legal in my state and many others. Probably have 5 “Dispensary” stores within 2 miles of my place. Unfortunately we are all NV CCW holders and I have 2 pilots in the fam. It’s a no choice for any of us, so good booze it is 👍

My Dad smoked a pipe when I was a kid but gave it up for Lent one year and never picked it up again. My ‘son’ and I usually enjoy a couple of good cigars when we shoot sporting clays; Arturo Fuente and Bobalu are our favorites, although I did splurge for Christmas and got us a couple of Davidoffs…
