As I posted in the piece about the Dobson & Rosson shotgun; seeing this Dealer always ends up with me parting with money. This is a Gamekeeper's Anti-Poaching alarm gun. Known as a 'Breech Loading long Drop Downward Firing Alarm Gun'. This example in in 12 bore and possibly made by John White Manufacturers of 14, Robert Road, Handsworth, Birmingham circa 1938.
The photos show the gun both loaded and in the fired position. A weighed lump of metal can be slid up into the live position and kept in place by a swivelling lever to which the trip wire is attached. Trip the lever and the weight slides down to strike the firing pin resting on the bland cartridge. The device has been subject to checking by the Birmingham Proof House and marked For 12 bore Black Powder Blank Cartridge.
