LCP .22lr

My son is wanting to get his wife a carry pistol.
We briefly discussed the LCP in .22lr. Seems like I remember someone here had bought one a while back but had issues with it. I’m wondering what ended up happening with that gun.
Or I may have dreamed the whole thing.

For the same size a Glock 42 would be better IMHO, or a revolver a LCR in 327. Practice with 32 smith then stoke it with full house loads when carrying.

If some one just had to have a 22 for a carry gun, I’d go with a Kel Tec P17.

I agree with Jay regarding a .22
Another to look at might be a SW Bodyguard 2.0 in .380.

I'm just not a fan of the 22LR for SD if there are other options available.
I'd take the added reliability of a CF 25ACP over one, personally, though I'm glad I don't have to use one of them either.
No, I don't want to get shot with one, however I also don't want to depend on one as my only option to stop someone from hurting me or someone I care about.

I agree a .22lr is no where near ideal. However, she doesn’t have any experience with guns. He was looking at a s&w 442 in a shop this evening. Idk what he’ll end up getting for her.

Let's be honest, If we all had a choice, we'd probably pick a rifle or shotgun, If we KNEW we were going to need to defend ourselves. EVERYTHING else is a compromise. The REAL question is, "How much are you willing to give up?".
I'd have a tough time choosing my 12ga or an AR. A pocket 380 is as small as I'd be willing to go, and I don't own or carry 1. 9mm is my limit

I don't think there is such problems with modern .22 LRs given that it's not a piece of crap to begin with. Stuttering .22s was true in the 80s but thankfully that's in the past.
I used to believe a .25 acp had superior penetration powers but me and my buddy did a phone book test comparing the two out of Berettas. . The LR penetrated at least 25 more pages. That was back in the day when phone books were thick.
One problem with the .22 is it's relatively its large and hard to conceal and get to if needed. Maybe there are more improvements in modern .22 pistols; a typical 9mm gets the nod in portability.
I carry a KelTek .32 and don't feel underarmed with it. Its small size is a force multiplier; shoot first and often. Some guy on "Forgotten Weapons" who was very knowledgeable and who had studied shooting stats. He said he who shoots almost always ends the threat.

I got my wife one, she likes it. It's picky about the ammo and I had an issue where it quit working, would not cock. Sent it back to Ruger and they replaced the slide assembly. Been working fine since I got it back. It's a good starter, get her used to shooting and move up from there!

However. You could just get the 9mm and load it with low recoil ammo.

Thats what I did with my 80-something year old mom. She was getting where the arthritis was making the .38 Spl was too much. So, I bought a spare P-17 Took her out to shoot it a bunch and left it with her.
She can mag dump 17 rounds of .22 into a pie plate group at 7 yards. Figured that should do the trick

That’s kinda where I am too. I know the .22 is not ideal. But, I don’t like shooting my little 9s or .380. I just don’t think she’s gonna want anything in 9mm or .380. The .327/.32 is intriguing. But finding one may be difficult.

Some of the pros and cons of the P17. At least how I see it, based on having one for a couple years.
Pros
It’s pretty compact. Not the smallest in size, but it’s not big.
It’s VERY light. Stupid light. Even with my suppressor on it.
Speaking of, the barrel comes from the factory 1/2-28. Suppressor ready
Mines been 100% reliable. Suppressed, not suppressed, subsonic or standard ammo. I don’t remember ever having a malfunction.
The trigger is excellent for what it is
Sights are pretty decent.
16+1 capacity
They’re right around $215 at Buds right now
Cons
The mag release is kinda iffy. Works fine. But it’s design could lend itself to accidental release of the mag
With a suppressor, it sprays junk back at your face. Eye pro necessary. Unsuppressed, not an issue.
For $215, it’s a no brainer. Even just for a plinker, snake gun, tackle box gun. If someone wanted to carry one for self defense, better than nothing. Load it up with 17 rounds of premium ammo and carry it. They really are stupid light.

Yeah, the mag release COULD be problematic.
Example, let’s say you were attempting to dispatch a wounded pig. If the mag dropped it could get interesting.

I have the model that came with a red dot. Shot it wearing gloves on one of our few cold days and had no issue. If anything it was more difficult than with no gloves.

Trust me. It can happen. Especially if you have tiny little midget fingers. Seen it. Almost had video of it.
