A while ago I spotted an Ruger carbine at the shop and put it “in the back” I would throw a few bucks at it when I remembered. Well it came home this week… it’s a 1999 vintage PC9 carbine. It’s built like a bowling ball and looks like it got very little use. The trigger is heavy but I guess it’s suppose to be, lame. I had the romeo 5 on it but stripped off all the optics and ordered a “peep” rear sight blade. It’s not a 200 yard gun… hard use plinker it it’s new life.

Well you already know I'm a fan. Can't wait ti try it out. run it head to head with even older school

When there are better options out there, obviously better options, I don’t understand you “purists” sometimes. But, good on ya for a new gun. I’ll give ya that. Keep using that flint to start a fire. It’s fun to watch. From a distance. Behind my own fire. Started with a torch and Girl Scout Water.

I'll have to drag my newer, definitely not just an oversized 10/22, PC Carbine out for comparison.

I had one in .40 caliber. It was accurate enough at 25 yards, but it, too, had an awful trigger. I called Riger about it and they said it was within specs. It was a patrol rifle until something better came along, that being the Mini 14.

I do have a flint and steel set with chard cloth for fire starter, how did you know? It’s like jumping into a 1978 Chevy pickup with that smell of grease, dust, gasoline and old Navajo blanket seat cover and just enjoy driving 50 mph on a county road…..yeah there are more comfortable trucks, faster, more economical but damn is that 78 fun to drive. That said I’m not driving it 300 miles, I’ll take the new one……

Always thought those were pretty cool. Along with the Ruger .44 mag rifles.


But the red dot would have to stay for me. While I’d prefer (mostly) a ghost ring and bigass fiber optic front sight, whatever color the sight is would be the color of the fuzzy blob my eye would see though the peep.

Runs on P85 mags as I recall? Plenty of those around. Hell, even the S&W Gen 1-2-3 mags for Sako's Marlin are pretty common.

It's got sights and it shoots. That it lacks a tube handguard and a threaded muzzle ain't necessarily relevant.

Its either a self-defense rifle or a fun rifle. Or a combination of both, it's a 9mm carbine. Fun, which is the most likely purpose. (If it needs a purpose.) My extremely poor youth 'won't give me permission to blissfully shoot with no other purpose of merely turning powder, and lead into fun. I can't throw away brass, either.

Neat little fun gun. I also had the .40 version a while back and somewhat regret selling it. Like the .44 mag version, there are “better” guns for most real purposes but those do make you smile in their oddness and at one time Ruger’s efforts at innovation.

I’m with CPJ, why take off the Romeo?

I do wish I had a PC Carbine in .40cal. Because………ammo. But, seems Ruger has stopped making them since the .40cal fell out of the manufacturers eyes.

Because it was stupid high! Was more of a chin weld rather than a cheek weld. For what it is a peep sight will work just fine

I'm a peep sight guy . I recently got a red dot for a .22 rifle but with the mount was unacceptability high.

I have to run a chin weld with my current CQB mount and AimPoint H2. It was a learning curve. But helps with certain situations. Had to train the brain for almost a 4” mechanical offset at close range. But, it’s doable.

For what you do at the shoe store and what I do hanging out at the play ground are two different worlds. This is a plinker and range toy and not something I’d grab to go to for anything serious.

Man, I wanted one of those back when they came out. Seemed like a good ‘step up’ from the 10/22.
