Grips fell from the sky, and they threw in a S&W 🤣

Hanging out with my chief enabler last Friday went to visit another friend I’ve never met, the manager of the gun store that has cost me a LOT of money over the last few years.
Elk creek is a great tour guide pointing to me all the highly attractive buys in the place, and then he points out a basically pristine Model 10-5. Well I do have a soft spot in my heart for pencil thin barrel Smiths… but… it’s just a run of the mill .38
WS: Wait…. What are those grips?????
EC: Pre-ban Elephant Ivory (he says smugly)
Quick calculation shows me the price of the gun is just a few $$$s more than if I managed to score the grips alone, which you can’t do at all unless you happen to live in a state where:
1- Someone is making them out of pre-ban Ivory (no one is)
2- You find a set already made before the ban (no one is selling theirs)
AND even if you find one set, they can NOT be shipped interstate!!! (Thanks fücking Obama)
Bought it Friday kept the grips with me so I could drive them home, and she showed up today! How’s that for service
She was born in 1966!

The ONLY wear. Can find on the gun and it’s only on one side

Did I mention she also has the original grips numbered to her

The right grip panel just needs a little cleaning.

Yep, minus one old smith with some yellow grips.

To be absolutely truthful I didn’t even look at the gun that close! I really just wanted the grips… BAD!
The closer I inspect it the more I realize that for a 60 year old gun this is basically pristine! The screws are perfect!

Put her back together the way I met her. I want to use these grips on something…. “dressy”… but it almost seems wrong to separate the gun from the grips. Someone loved this gun enough to make her special.

I think the black disk backings have some significance but I’m not an expert

You can see the serial number stamped on the inside of the grip panel

Classic

I have to think this through…

NIIIIIIIIICE!
Not sure how ivory matches up with the quintessential police duty revolver, but it does give a good indication of how it would look on a big N. If I ever land a Triple Lock with the wrong grips, I'll have to give that some thought.
And to second Zee, thank Horace and Daniel they aren't stag!!

That's a great vintage. When I pull back the hammer on this gun it feels like it's on ball bearings and the single action pull is even better than the 66 I just got.

Ivory was not an expensive upgrade back in the past, neither was stag for that matter. I remember when both were basically interchangeable and about $100 investment if you got the real thing. I know a lot of old retired LEOs that put "fancy" grips on their guns since that was about the ONLY thing they could do to personalize them back then. And just to make you and Zee happy I will start looking for a nice set of stags for the 66

I don't remember the load but mine likes 160 gr cast round nose, loaned it out two times. Once to a friend for a match he was shooting at the local gun club. didn't win but did do well. Loaned it to my brother to teach his step daughter to shoot and then she used it to qualify when she joined the Bakersfield sheriff dept.

I’ve owned a few over the years that always seem to get past on to friends that need a simple, high quality, well priced SD or HD gun. They were all consistent good shooters!
None were as well preserved as this example so I think this one will stay here. Elk creek suggested it’d be a great first center fire handgun for my granddaughter so that is under consideration right now.
