Now for something a bit different
Now for something a bit different
Recently was feeling bored and felt the need to put another rifle together, however was kind of tired of doing the same old thing...I mean, the last one I built was a near duplicate of one I had built previously but forgot I had... In my quest to do something different I'm starting with this 1:8 .223 Wylde, 20" Bolt Action AR upper...Not exactly sure where I'm going with this but I'll post pics of the finished product...ideas/suggestions welcome

I’ve been tempted by those. Interested in seeing how this turns out

They make decent stuff! I have a side charging 5.56 nato 16” AR. I shot it suppressed the other day and was pleasantly surprised when I realized that zero gas comes back through the charging handle it all gets vented out the side of the bolt. Anyway, that should be a fun project!!

Interested in the bolt manipulation.

Re: Now for something a bit different
That would be annoying. Because you’d be fighting the spring to open it.

I’d love to see a picture of the actual bolt. Looks really interesting.
Re: Now for something a bit different
I thought that too...but the guy I'm talking to says it doesn't work that way...it needs a buffer tube with the spring and buffer removed...

I can accommodate that as soon as I get back from town and figure out how to remove the bolt handle to get the bolt out...Wambli Ska wrote: ↑Fri Jul 18, 2025 3:31 pm I’d love to see a picture of the actual bolt. Looks really interesting.

I wish they would make uppers like this in a single shot that can accommodate the .308 family, but use a standard AR lower. Missed opportunity there.

Which will answer my next question, how do you remove the handle?Jayhawker wrote: ↑Fri Jul 18, 2025 4:31 pmI can accommodate that as soon as I get back from town and figure out how to remove the bolt handle to get the bolt out...Wambli Ska wrote: ↑Fri Jul 18, 2025 3:31 pm I’d love to see a picture of the actual bolt. Re: Now for something a bit different
I watched some vids and have a side charger. There is a screw in the rear that keeps the bolt in the channel. The bolt knob is held in place with two screws.Wambli Ska wrote: ↑Sat Jul 19, 2025 3:02 pmWhich will answer my next question, how do you remove the handle?Jayhawker wrote: ↑Fri Jul 18, 2025 4:31 pmI can accommodate that as soon as I get back from town and figure out how to remove the bolt handle to get the bolt out...Wambli Ska wrote: ↑Fri Jul 18, 2025 3:31 pm I’d love to see a picture of the actual bolt. Having a tough time visualizing that. Maybe a video will work but when I get on YouTube it becomes a rabbit hole of old watch restorations, off-road rescues and boot rebuilds.Diver43 wrote: ↑Sat Jul 19, 2025 3:06 pmI watched some vids and have a side charger. Re: Now for something a bit different
There was a company back in the early 2000s that made a single shot 50BMG upper for a standard AR lower. You had to pop the rear pin, break it open like a shotgun, and slide the bolt out of the upper to load the round.shotgunshooter3 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 18, 2025 6:55 pm I wish they would make uppers like this in a single shot that can accommodate the .308 family, but use a standard AR lower. You remove the two Allen screws.

Interested in if it is accurate. Their 300 BO side charger is acceptable. The .22 mag is a moa gun

The two on either side of the bolt handle, visible if you zoom in on the photo?

Re: Now for something a bit different
So, do you have to cam the bolt down? On a gas powered AR, the bolt itself cams due to the movement of the bolt carrier and the angle of the cam pin slot.
