When I lived in Wisconsin, a new acquaintance wanted me to take him grouse hunting so he could show off his new Springer that was supposed to be a poop-hot retriever. Well, the first grouse I shot, the dog took off, grabbed said bird in its gentle mouth and proceeded to run off into the woods. Coming back about 20 minutes later with feathers all over the inside of its mouth, grinning broadly.

It happens..I had a line of Springer Spaniels that were often described as "poop hot" bird dogs...They were soft mouthed hunting fools...however...every now and then a quail would get swallowed...and my last Springer, Jake would always manage to eat the first Dove of the season...
