My Final Grail Gun finally came home.

I’ve wanted one for decades. Several people have tried to help over the years. But, the condition, the chambering, or the price weren’t right. I’d all but given up. Even deciding on a Winchester M88 in .308 Win last year as the closest I’d ever get.
Then, a forum member, who has been trying to entice me on different guns for years sent me a text with the perfect rifle in the perfect condition, in the perfect chambering, at the perfect price.
Guess I just had to stop looking to find the right one.

Savage 99E in .243 Winchester made in 1968.

Now, I just need to decide if I want to scope it or run irons or peep.

I kinda like the peep idea.

This actually worked out better than expected. I originally wanted a 99 in .308 Win. So I got the Win Model 88 so chambered. Now this one showing up in .243 Winchester is perfect as that’s probably my other favorite cartridge.

Very nice. Those always fascinated me, but not enough to get me past the asking price. That should be a really nice shooting rifle in .243.

Put a Redfield “wide view” scope on it and it will be almost identical to the rifle I shot my first deer with.

Nice score! I am jealous

It’s not the fanciest or most sought out of the Savage 99 models. But, everything was right to bring it home.

I put a lot of trust in the forum member. I bought it sight unseen from his inspection and pictures and he even cleaned the rifle at the store to make sure everything was good for me.

I’m indebted.

Now that’s an awesome rig! I would go with a tang sight and globe front. I love savage 99’s they were way ahead of their time!
Great snag!!

I don’t know about good hands. But, it’s in mine now. Too late to be quick.

Great Find
I think a period correct wide view scope or Peep Sight. The guys in Colorado reminded me of how fun and accurate peep and tang sights are.
Congrats.

That’s how I’m leaning. Already in my Midway “wish list”.

NICE! I bet that thing will hardly budge when you touch it off.

An LPVO is my first instinct, but I'd want to see where the stock puts my face (of course, that's where the strap-on cheek risers come in). My second instinct is a peep with a Lyman 17A globe and post up front. I set up my Winchester 69A like that and it's a wicked plinking combo.

At any rate, I'm thinking fast handling, mid-range, point-and-click laser beam. Whatever lets your eyes do that best.

The 99 I restocked for my dad has a marbles sight on it, he loves it.
I found a 1931 99 with a 3 time broken and 3 time repaired stock that I got for a song. It’s the first and LAST time I will ever inlet a savage 99 even from a “95%” blank! They are a pain in the ass!!!!

Receiver sight designed for the savage 99 seem to cover up a lot of down range, where the tang sights do not. I like them both they just have different applications.

Leaning peep and globe because a matte scope would be an abomination.

For what it's worth, my vote is the Marbles tang sight. Simply the perfect accessory.
