John Wayne rig…

Digging through my packed stuff as part of my cleaning/reorganizing for a potential next move. This is always fun because I always find things I’ve forgotten I own and since I’m taking all of December off on vacation it’s a good time to finish “projects”. The parts for this have been coming along for a while and today I got it all done.
The rig is a Bianchi Frontier Leather belt and holster that I got at different times. They claim they made the originals for The Duke and even sell commemoratives in sets that are rather pricey. Now other companies claim the same, notably EPS and it could be true since over the years Mr. Wayne wore a few different variations (and sizes

) of this setup. Actually I have an EPS rig somewhere in my packed boxes too but as much as I love EPS stuff this is actually higher quality.
In any case I got fake ivory one piece grips fitted to one of my 4.5” SA guns and here she is finally finished. I need to get the grips to go a little yellow like his originals but this is close enough for my purposes. It now goes witha few others like the Indiana Jones 1917 and the 1876 45-60 musket in the movie guns collection. Now I need a large loop ‘92 Saddle ring carbine to go with it

Several companies make similar. Basically a doubled over heavy roughout “money belt” with sawn in loops for ammo. El Paso and Bianchi Frontier claim to be the originals and I have both somewhere around here but I also have another nice one by Galco and I think I might have one by Cimarron which is usually EPS too. I have them in .44/45 and .38 loops which fit 32-20 also.
These belts are exceptionally comfortable and they mold themselves to you after just a few wearing which is why John Wayne loved them. The rig really becomes yours. The holster rides lower just behind 3:00 but high enough with the short barrel gun that you can sit without it interfering.

I thought you had a Duke-style SAA grip on something, with the yellowed ivory and finger indents.
Nice rig, btw…

Thanks. No, not me. I’ve looked a few times at the grips with the finger groves but I can’t bring myself to go that far. I will yellow these grips some but that’s as far as I’ll go.

Nothing beats a good leather rig, unless it’s a web belt, I won’t wear a non money belt rig.

I will absolutely concede that few belts are as comfortable as a heavy web belt followed by a “money belt” design. They both have just a hint of give to them and they break in well and shape themselves to you.
