Be careful lads...

So, I was depriming a live .308 case because the primer looked grungy and got sloppy/careless.

Set off the primer. Little bastige came off the case and followed the curve of the ram right into my leg.

Punched a whole in my jeans and into the skin of my thigh.

Had to put a gauze pad on it to control the bleeding. Stings a bit, still. And was loud.

Done similar several times before, never had one go off.

Primers are no joke. Years ago when. Was in my 20s I decided to just pop a primer in my basement just to see how loud they were. Didn’t want the wife to know about it so I grabbed an old couch pillow she had stored down there and thought I’d do the movie silencer trick. Put the muzzle into the pillow and pulled the trigger.

The blast sounded like a real shot in that windowless basement and the pillow caught fire after blowing feathers everywhere. So my wife came running down the stairs to see me stomping on what looked like a flaming chicken that I’d shot.

I’m always surprised that I have not been left by both my wives in my life. 😁

Irony much?

Did the primer cup go into your leg or just cut you?

I am pretty religious about wearing eye protection while reloading. That is why

Punched through jeans and cut the skin. It didn't stay in.

Glad you weren't hurt worse. It has always been my practice to put a drop of oil into the primer prior to punching out a live one.

I try not to punch out live ones but if I HAVE to I’ll put a few drops of CLP in through the flash hole and let them sit for a few days too.

You mean everyone doesnt just toss them in the trash?
😁
I dont reload any volume, so haven't had one yet. I guess loading one at a time lessons the odds.
What should one do if say an prime loads sideways or backwards and it brass you have hundreds of?

Sideways primers I have carefully pried out with a screwdriver or removed with needle nose pliers.

Backwards? Up until today I would have eased out with a decapper. Maybe carefully remove the anvil first?

I will try oil in the future. But I've read that's not a sure thing.

Yep.

Glad I didn't have a mishap earlier this week casting. I did get over 1,600 bullets cast. 9, .38, and .45.

Molten metal makes me ultra cautious.

It’s a very low volume problem, probably haven’t punched 20 in 40 some odd years of reloading. Always did the oil thing, never a mishap. Sideways, pry out carefully. Upside down, easy to remove the anvil with a small pick. Still put a drop of oil for good measure.

I’v heard t’s not a 100% thing but hasn’t failed me yet. I might run an expediment just to see.

I’ve had a few primers seated sideways in the case, I just pitch them. It’s usually in a pistol case so no biggie. I had one in a 348 case, I put a drop of CLP on the open side of the cup and waited a day and recapped it… easy peasy

When my brother was in high school he got a (free) Lee handloader for his 30-30. It used a metal rod and a hammer to seat the primers. You could tell when things didn't go right by the 'WHACK ting ting ting' of the metal rod smacking the ceiling in the basement and rattling across the concrete floor like a pinball machine.

So, if you injure yourself doing something, your family will leave you alone in the future when you do it.
