I have a Savage MK II FV .22lr. I have a scope upgrade on the with rings and also decided to remove the factory base and replace it with a rail. Jad a heck of time getting them off even with heat. When the screws finally broke loose I found a bunch of oil under them. Its been a while but I remember leaning the screws and threads with alcohol before mounting. Should there be a coat of oil between the barrel and rail or clean and dry?

Clean & dry I believe

That's what i was thinking. I was surprised at how wet it was under the mounts.

I don't know anything about the right way of doing this.

Never stopped me before.

I'd think giving the area a coating of wax would last longer than a coat of oil though.

Never heard of that but a good idea

I’ve used Johnson’s paste wax, grease, oil, hoppes…something to put a layer of protection down.
I also lube up the parts of the action that are hidden by the stock.
