Definitions of long range vary, and we will likely be told our definitions are wrong…
But anyway, whatcha got?

Savage target action chambered in .243. 30” barrel, stock built by yours truly. 620 yards is the farthest I’ve shot, but I’ve got the distance for around 800 at my cousins place. Once it cools down and deer season is over, I’ll try that again. I’ll
See if I can dig up a pic of my groups at 600.

First group at 620 yards. The odd yardage number is because that’s as far as I could get that day due to the corn and hay crops.

About a 6” group.

After un-assing myself and improving my technique, I turned in this group of 3”

Nice.
I’ve always been interested in left port actions. Never owned one.

There is a pretty firm standard for long range that has been used for about a century.

0-300 is short. Targets are designated as SR for short range. Think of it as a max point blank range distance. A range where your bullet will not go higher or lower than 4 inches away from the line of sight and wind displacement is minimal. Set the sights and hit fur on most med size critters. Battle sight for non hunting rifles.

5-600 is mid range. This is where you have to dope wind and add elevation. Targets are designated with MR, for mid range.

800-1000 are labeled LR for long range where everything matters more. Beyond that is where the magic comes in.

A 300yd target cant use the long range pronoun. No one recognizes trans targets. The countdown for my LR rifle is about a month yet before I can expect the stock. Hoping to put it in a MR match in Oct.

Nice shooting. Take that thing to a MR F-class match. It will open up a new world or stuff to buy :)

I get what you are saying for competition, but what is long range for a day: .22lr, .357 mag?

IMO...it depends. I've had days that center-punching an upright pdog at 700 with a .223 Rem rifle was a no-brainer. OTOH, I've had days when either the wind or mirage was so bad that hitting one at 300 was far more luck than skill. So...one day 700 = almost boredom. The next, 300 is a problem.

While I certainly remember most of my long distance shots, I more often recall the ones I made at much shorter distances under terrible circumstances.

Case in point. While after pdogs one morning, the wind kicked up just as I was opening the gate. It was so bad that unless I was on my bench the wind kept knocking it over. The pdogs weren't out. I finally ranged an old grizzled one atop his mound at 344 yards. Getting prone, with 6" Harris bipod, I spotted a 2-3" cactus about 5 feet upwind of him. I decided to fire a spotter at that cactus.

At the shot the pdog turned into a red rainbow. I was actually aiming at a target 5 feet upwind of him.

When I got home, I let QuickLoad do the math. The wind had to have been blowing around 52 mph.

I can't take credit for the shot. Either I got lucky or God had it in for that particular pdog. But 344 yards was damn sure "long range" that day.

My “best” distance shot on a target (that I can remember) was a second round hit at 1,600 yards on a silhouette with a 168gr A-Max .308 Winchester and the scope set at 4x. I dialed 10 Mils and held 25 Mils in elevation. Don’t remember my first wind hold. But, I saw the impact of the miss and corrected with 14 Mils left wind hold and hit the second shot. Roughly 65.5 feet of wind hold.

I’ve shot further. But, I remember that shot.

JunkCollector...here's one you'll enjoy.......

One morning ScooterTrash and I had been plugging pdogs at 500-600 yards routinely. We decided to move to a new dogtown we'd discovered a couple months before that we'd not yet shot. As we opened the gate, right there was a newer dogtown full of fat pdogs that didn't even know what a pickup meant. The town couldn't have been 100 yards across.

We went to work, and it didn't last long. Being so close range the dogs duck at the report much quicker that at longer ranges. It was probably over in 90 seconds.

I fired 8 shots during that time, none more than 80 yards away and cut nary a hair. Scooter had 6 dead dogs in front of his bench.

Scooter, being Scooter, said, "We need to sell your scope and weld an 'effin' bayonet mount to your barrell.".

Well, the topic was on a centerfire rifle. However, 22lr at 200 is considered the equivalent of 600 as to the wind effects. IAW my buddy that shoots 22lr benchrest. He says a full value one mph wind will push the bullet 1 moa so that jives with a 223 at 600.

Range is range. It doent get longer or shorter due to the day or target size. It is what it is and makes you take additional steps to make hits. RE the post Zee just made. Service rifle mid range is 600 yards, 6in x ring. F-class where you are taking out as much human as possible without blocking the rifle on concrete... Mid range is still 600 with a target that has a 3 inch x ring. A service pistol or revolver or a flintlock with roundballs are not capable of a 600 yd shot (note I said service)

The short range being battle sight zero for service which is pretty darn close to max point blank range for a hunting rifle it just assumes a larger zone of impact. You can set your sight and hit to that range with little wind effect and no knob spinning. (shooting during a hurricane does not negate this) Basically point and click range.

357 mag was a service handgun. So to transfer it to a service pistol, At what range does the elevation have to be dialed in/Kentuckyed so as to keep hitting the target? A 357mag can make reliable hits at 100yds. Bullseye comp is normally 25 and 50 yds open sights one hand. It will hit aiming at the target at 25 and 50 = short range. 75 you are holding off the impact point a sizable amount so mid range At 100, you have to cover the target to the point your line of sight is off the target = long range and about the max distance the bullet is effective.

A person not being able to hold hard at the size of target does not mean that it suddenly becomes longer. However it has to be based on equipment. Apples to apples though, a center fire rifle is at short range at 300.

Here is my F-TR rifle as it is now. I showed a picture of it on the "forum-that-was" about 10 years ago when it was first built. It has evolved over the years, and seen many barrels. The current one is its fifth and it's approaching the end of precision life. I have two more ready to be fitted, probably my last pair. It's a .308 Winchester.

I thought I'd better wade in with my; much less impressive, target rifle. A Norwegian Kongsberg target rifle in 7.62mm. The range is at Blair Atholl in Perthshire, Scotland. The range picture is from the 1,000 yard firing point. You can just make out the targets; white squares with black bullseyes. No scope sights in this game. Short range shoot is over three distances; 300, 500 & 600 yards and the long range is then at 900 & 1,000 yards. All shot prone with 2 sighters and 10 to count. I did once win the coveted bottle of whisky at the 1,000 yard shoot. Tenth shot anywhere on the target and it would be mine. I managed to finish with a V Bull. Happy man! The range is on the private estate of the Duke of Atholl. Interesting fact now; the Duke of Atholl is the only private citizen allowed to have his own army known as 'The Atholl Highlanders'. You can find bits on You-tube. Mainly ceremonial but none the less trained as proper soldiers with all the combat kit too.
