My nephew has bought a custom 16 inch, 8.6 Creedmoor bolt rifle (a mild recoiling 35 Remington). It is an interesting cartridge and works in his favored platform, the AR15. His intention is a deer/pig rifle. He's trying to choose a scope and his thought, misguided is my opinion, is that bigger is better. He's considering a 4x12 and 50 m bell. He believes this is a 400 yard rifle. I disagree, I consider it a 225 yard rifle because of its rainbow trajectory. It has enough energy for 400 yards, but it's got 50+ inches of drop. For that reason, I'm suggesting 1.5x5 or 2x7. I think a 1.5 x 8 would be best! Would a 3x9 be too much at close range?

What say you? What manufacturer and model should he be looking at? With that cartridges' trajectory, what recital would you suggest?

Agreeing with Zee, I would go with a 1-6x, 1-8x, or maybe a 1-10x.

A fair number of 1-6 / 1-8 out there. A 2.5-8 would be fine. More than that, I'd consider a bit too much. From what little I've troubled to glean from a couple of searchers on the round, it looks like it's going to be playing in and around the .30-30 ballpark for flight characteristics. Probably a very practical 200 yard option; beyond that, probably not so much.

I'd suggest you introduce your nephew to the "point blank" concept of zeroing. How far out can you zero the round to where the bullet will not climb out of or drop below a 6" tall target (your deer/pig kill zone) without having to compensate? A brief taste of that, he may start to understand it's brush gun nature.

Thank you gentlemen, I called him this afternoon and he took our advice. He's looking for a LPV with ballistic plex recital. The rifle will have an AR style stock because that is a comfortable platform and a silencer that is easily removed, weight with the silencer will be 7.25 lbs. Not my cup of tea but I'm impressed, a modern Marlin 336 in 35 Rem with light recoil, and an adjustable stock. He will hand load soon, so ammo will not be a problem.

Its a neat, niche round. The developer is a bit of a douchecanoe. And by a bit, I mean he is on par with Lazeroni.

Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6 or 1-8.
The 1-6 works fine on my 6.8 SPC

In the Strike Eagle, I prefer the clarity of the 1-6x of the two.

I despise reticles like that. They will rarely match your load exactly. And with his 8.6, ain’t a chance. I much prefer a MOA reticle, and then confirm my own drops. There’s tons of free calculators that will get you in target, and then you just need to confirm.
