Just heard about Hornady's new round, the 22ARC.
Sounds like they're trying their hand and something along the lines of the, apparently failed, 22 Valkyrie

This reminds me I need to get back to load development on my 224 Valkyrie - started to show some potential but still need to refine.

62 gr bullet at 3300 fps sounds pretty good out of an AR platform. If the claim below holds true this cartridge might be worth building an upper for...

"The 62-grain ELD-VT bullet in the platform offers superior wind deflection, maintained velocity and downrange energy when compared to the .22-250."

Hornady seems to have less misses than other companies when it comes to bringing new cartridges to market. Interesting. I don't plan to buy one but it might have a place.

I like that they keep trying new things. This one may have some legs in states that allow 22 centerfires for big game I would think.

JKP, they're adding a new bullet line, the ELD V/T. Looking at the data, it basically appears to be a heavier bullet, but they're putting less lead in it, leaving it light, but long, for better aerodynamics and the "air space" leading to more explosive expansion

Edited to add:

Hornady engineers moved the center of gravity rearward in the ELD-VT bullet via a unique lead layout, creating a large air cavity in front of the lead. Doing so aids in bullet stability and instigates dramatic and instantaneous fragmentation upon impact, precisely what the die-hard predator hunter needs to optimize terminal performance and minimize fur damage.

SS3, I'm trying to think of the niche it could fill in MY shooting hobbies, and keep coming up blank.
Nothing I do really even strains a 223, so it will most likely be a pass for me also.

That's fair. I could, theoretically, find a niche for it. However, I inherited a VERY nice .22-250 and .243, which both fill the need if .223 can't do it.

For AR platforms, for my uses, I don't have any good reason to stray from a 1:7 or 1:8 .223.

Id be interested to see the data for 40 grain bullets. Id like something SMOKING in an ar platform with as little drop as possible for coyote hunting at night. Range estimation is tough at night, anything that helps with the margin of error would be welcomed.

Missed the *at night* part.

I've been barfing up the "short action" Kool Aid whenever somebody wants me to take a sip for a good number of years now. It ultimately comes down to some version of "The .308 Winchester is not a .30-06 no matter how much you sugar-coat it, and it never, ever will be"

The latest batch of this Kool Aid seems to be attempting to cram the performance of the .308-based family of 51mm long wildcats (.243, 7-08 etc...) and close cousins (.22-250) into the 45mm-centric AR-15 magazine well. I don't need my every ballistic requirement to fit Eugene Stoner's action.

Meh.

Yet his original action was designed around the 51mm case.
"Uncle sugar" and the wiz kids wanted smaller. At least that's my understanding of it.

I read the review, although I didn't study it. What is "sport shooting"? I thought all civilian shooting was sport shooting. I love .22 rounds, but have always been able to scratch that itch with what's on the current market. I don't expect a huge rush to purchase yet another .22 round.
