As some of you know dad has been thinning down his “heavy kickers” and favoring the lighter recoiling rifles recently. One of them was a marlin 1895 guide gun in 45-70. My dad took a buffalo on my great uncles ranch several years back with it on a “hunt” with my brother. As dad decided to part with it he called and told me, “your brother is getting the 45-70, I figure you’d like the 39a.” I took the turkey with the same 39a…. Well I’m honored…..Dad sent it down from Montana with my nephew on Christmas Day. What a present!

I just took a bunch of guns out to the desert for an afternoon of plinking with my wife, daughter and son-in-law. The 39 was the one they were all lining up for

Because of this I now have a full portable rimfire range sitting permanently in the back of my Jeep with a bunch of metal plates and a dueling tree.

These are XS sights. Dad has a thing for rifles set up the same way and sets of rifles. Dad found a 1895 Guide gun at a pawn shop for $275 (ah the good old days) but hated the factory sights so he added XS sights. One afternoon at the range he shot my 39a set up with a Williams sight and decided he needed one. I can still hear him complain about spending “almost six hindered bucks for a 22!” He set it up with XS sights too. He liked the same sight picture on both rifles. Funny thing is I decided to buy a guide gun on that trip and put XS winged sights on it!
