Bergara B14 HMR range report

Got out in the rain today with the new Bergara. Pretty much steady rain the whole time but I did have the range to myself on a Saturday.
Started with some 148 gr PMC to see if it would go bang between chicken sacrifices and other barrel break in voodoo. Six rounds of that proved that ammo also sucks in this rifle and got the scope more or less dialed in.
Then sent 4 rounds of Federal GM match 168gr down range.

Moved on to some hand loads as it started to rain harder. Varget showed little promise. H4895 did shoot a couple of decent groups with the Hornady 168 ELD match. That will likely be the load I explore more going forward. Also have some 155 ELD match bullets on the way.

I'll admit when I do stupid stuff so others can either benefit or at least laugh. The brake is self time with a nut that tightens. I actually read the instructions which say tighten a bit past hand tight with a (metric) crescent wrench. The assembler forgot that part and just hand tightened.
So, sent a round with a loose brake. Gas went places it wasn't supposed to and accuracy was noticeably off!

I know Diver did a lot of research before he bought his and he is 110% happy with it. If I didn't already own 3 rifles in .308, I would be considering one.

Mine prefers 168 gr ELD-M and Fed GM in the same weight. It seems the more I shoot it, the more accurate it gets.

I was wondering the same thing. I was also shooting a .22LR at 100 yards and definitely felt like that was impacted.

The reason I proposed that question is that many years ago I was deer hunting in the Midwest when a friend missed a deer at less than 100yds in rain. Rem 700 3006, scope off a makeshift rest. We saw the impact in a cut bean field. The shot was at least 3 ft out. The elevation was hard to judge.
Doing a little reading turned up an article on actual measurements. Here is an excerpt. It was in G&A
This was a 308 round
couple of PhD candidates determined that a drop of rain induced a 3.2-degree yaw on our 125-grain bullet. Thanks to some judicious pixel counting by our big-brained team of scientists, we also determined that the bullet’s yaw was not directly correlated to the flight path; 3.2 degrees is some serious yaw. We observed 4 inches of deflection at 50 yards
Bottom line don’t draw any conclusions about the performance of a particular load recipe or rifle if shooting through rain

Interesting. I've never shot in rain but I have shot in a snow storm before. You could see the bullets path, kind of a vortex through the snow but I don't recall it having any significant adverse reaction on point of impact.

Despite the source, that's a good read. I definitely had a couple of rounds that had me scratching my head wondering how it was that far off. Like 2-3" off. Can't say for sure but I believe they were fired in the heavier rain.

Worked on some load development today. Shot some mediocre groups with 168 gr ELD match over H4895. Then some 155 ELD match over Varget. The 155 load shows some promise. Wind was blowing about 20 mph.

You and a friend shot a deer from out of the pool area in the rain not too long ago, correct?

Well that did not seem to make any difference. I suppose we could put you in a wife beater and spray you with a garden hose while you shoot, Science!

The way the pictures are coming from the recent crew hunting, we should have enough for a calendar to give Snap-On a run for their money, so yeah, get him to thong up

That is good news. I can continue the ridicule for another 20 years over that shot with clean conscience. I had heard the "it was raining" line many times.
