Swapped the VX 3 4-5-14 50mm scope off the T3x 243 and replaced it with the new Leica....then decided to rationalise a couple of other scopes already on rifles...Pulled my Howa 204 Ruger out of the safe and didnt like the look of the Leaupold Freedom 4-12x40 on it so replaced it with the VX3....then put the Freedom on my T1x.....Figured that was enough.
Problem was, I dont like having unsighted rifles in my safe!

Bh, his son and Partner decided to head up to his bush block to mess around and sight a couple of rifles in...I took the 243 and the T1x. Conditions were not good as the wind was blowing up to 25knots in gusts but I figured that the bowl where the 100 yd/metre range is located would be reasonably sheltered. On arrival, it didnt look too bad.

I go and place a target out at the 100 mark, using my new Leica rangefinder.....get back to the bench to confirm the distance and Bh says "Why did you put it there, its only 92 according to my rangefinder".
Thats when the argument started.
I ranged it again and it came back at 101.3....he ranged it again at 92....To resolve the problem he gets out his Thermal and it comes back at 93....
"Better go take your new rangefinder back, its defective"
"No, Yours is old technology"
After much discussion and banter I said "I dont care, I aint moving the target"
Having boresighted the 243, I was confident it would be on paper so sent the first shot down range.......It was low and left by about 8".......Dialled the scope up and by shooting between gusts I managed to get it on the pasty after a few more shots. I noted the rifle was getting quite hot ( its summer over here with very high temps) so I put it in the shade and left it for 30 mins to cool down. Got the T1x on paper at 50 and after plinking for a while, was satisfied that it would do until conditions were better and I could stretch its legs.
We continued with the distance argument/banter until BH gets a towing strap out, measures its length with a 3 foot ruler, then him and his son use it to confirm the 100 distance at 92...After they finished measuring it in the hot sun and came back I accepted their findings.............then quietly pointed out that I was measuring it in yds, while BH's rangefinder was set on metres...

101.3 yds = 92m. That started a whole new argument with BH going on about 'sighting in a metric adjustable scope at an imperial distance' and me countering with 'Why do you sight in a scope with moa adjstments at a metric distance'.... :D
During this discussion I noted that the 243 was now cold, so I loaded a round, settled in at the bench and fired a cold bore shot to verify its zero at 100yds...... then I went and bought the target back.
Here is the pic...

Showed him the target and said "It aint going to matter much to the deer" ......which closed that argument!!!
Because that range is limited to 100yds/m I need to pick a fine day, head back up to a different location and stretch the 243 out to 300yds +.
As Far as the new Leica scope goes, I am impressed with the clarity of glass. The image is crisp and clear compared to the VX3...the fov of the 50mm is large even on 15x, the zoom is smooth and effortless and even though it is longer than the vx3, the rifle is well balanced. Might have to go get another Leica as soon as funds get sufficient...

Good shooting. Not much you can't accomplish with that kind of accuracy
