You have a good supply or access to ammo?
I haven’t looked at 7.62x39 in over 30 years.

Because side chargers are more cooler and several have BCA items and have had no issues.

Or magazines. And putting red commie bastard ammo in an AR is wrong.

That’s a loaded question

I do like my one side charger, I forget about Bear Creek until someone posts about them. $10 is $10 though, magazines are out there and not to bad of a price

Ammo might be an issue in an AR upper, AK’s are not picky

$10 is worth getting a known good upper.
But, you’ll be a commie.
Get Zeds favorite. .300 BO.

Should really have one of each, my concern is that my commie ammo is going to choke the AR gas system

I think the massive availability of cheap .300 BO ammo has made the idea of 7.62 uppers kind of a meh thing.

Cousin found this:
There are a couple of things to consider when shooting steel.
The casing does not expand like a brass casing does. This means that you will have more gas and therefor more fouling in the action of the rifle. A lot of people think that the powder is “dirtier” but that is generally not the case. Its just a lack of case wall expansion. So you will need to clean your rifle a little more often. As a caveat to the “not dirtier” statement. If you are seeing a lot more smoke coming out of the barrel on “smokeless” powder then you did infact find a brand that has less cleanly burning powder. However You will be cleaning your weapon anyway due to the original issue.
The steel is marginally harder on the extractor. However an AR15 extractor is anywhere from $10–20 USD. Buy a spare and change it out when you shoot steel.
There is an idea that the coating on the casing will rub off and foul up the chamber. While that can happen it would take hundreds of rounds of continuous fire to get the barrel hot enough. If you have any doubts on that, take a piece of fired brass and put a blow torch to it. See how long it takes for the coating to come off under 1000 degrees. It will last longer than you think.
Circling back to point 1. Your accuracy will suffer. This is not due to just inconsistencies in the round or powder drop, it has more to do with inconsistent pressures as the round is being propelled out of the barrel.

If you have 7.62 ammo or a source of it I’d say do it! Personally I went the 300BO route for consistency in bullet diameter and brass cases as the standard. After the fact I love the versatility of the 300 any 30 caliber bullet and 296 or lilgun and bingo a workable load. Not a fan of steel cases….

Unfortunately, most of the reasonably priced 7.62X39 these days is steel cased, brass cased stuff is not really plinking prices these days

How did the Ghostbusters put it? DON'T CROSS THE STREAMS!
The AR was designed to run on the ammo equivalent of quadruple-filtered, FAA-approved, high octane aviation gasoline. Steel case 7.62x39 has a decent chance of being turpentine mixed with hangover piss. The AR-15 started with a straight 20 round miniaturized copy of the M14 mag, and has a ruler-straight magazine well to go with it. The reliable 30 round 5.56 magazine with a curve in it did not magically occur overnight. Now look at pronounced the curve the 7.62x39 requires of the AK mag. In short, the base AR parts groups and gas system and AK round are NOT the blissful union of chocolate and peanut butter.
The Blackout was designed to provide an AK performance equivalent with those engineering puzzles in mind. If you want to blast with AK / SKS ammo, go buy an AK / SKS that WILL run on turpentine and hangover piss, and can be had with appropriate urethras (mags and stripper clips) to dispense it through.

I tend to agree with the man above. Even if I hate the BlackOut.

I have no dog in the Blackout fight, but it's at least designed for AR geometry. 7.62x39 is kind of like trying to install a 5-stud rim onto a 6-stud axle.
if the quest is for cheap, steel-cased blasting 5.56 ammo, it does - or at least did - exist from the same sources the 7.62x39 came from. I haven't really followed recent cost or availability of that stuff with the current chilling of relationships with Russia - I just know that It'll run in a service grade AR for at least a few mags. It may still be turpentine and hangover piss, but as with any ammo, keep squirting CLP into the BCG and it probably won't care much.

I have communist designed guns, just looking at options at relatively cheap prices, I talked myself out of it, I "need" a 10.5" .300 BO upper I guess, thanks for the input folks.

I like the 7.62x39, and the PSA I have is a hell of a rifle on the ARish platform.
I say get it. If nothing else it will be fun

While I’m no friend/advocate of the Blackout, by any means, it’s probably the better logistical choice for the AR platform.

That there is as good of an enforcement as you will ever get!!

I picked up a 7.62x39 a few years ago. My simple reasoning being it would be one that in dire times ammo would be available. It shoots well enough centering steel at 100 yards with a red dot. That being said, I wish I had gone the Blackout route instead. Much more versatile and available. EC has loaded his with bullets from 110gr to 174gr. Can't do that with 7.62x39.

Even the Russians have, by and large, abandoned the 7.62x39
The Ak-74 and later models are based on the 5.45x39
