Re: Spring Turkeys
I'm getting ready! My two main shotguns were set up for goose and duck, Beretta 391AL and Mossburg 5500 MK II. The Beretta has a synthetic stock and is tuned to fit me. I installed a Burris speed beard that I've had for years but didn't like for duck hunting. The Mossberg is my first true hunting shotgun. It was meant as a teal gun, but I found it cheap and easy to modify with a synthetic stock and multiple barrels for everything from deer to Turkey.
The Burris speed bead is a red dot that is attached between the receiver and stock. It was dipped to match my camo face mask and gillie hat. The Mossberg closely matches most woodland camo and with a side mount scope mount it will be easy to take 50 yard headshots. I had a 2x7 Redfield in the shelf, so that's what's it will wear this year.
It's fun irritating my wife with my slate call and box call!
Yea, I know the pic of the Beretta sucks!

Re: Spring Turkeys
Buddy and I doubled yesterday morning. .410 is a viable turkey gun with TSS shot. A number nine TSS pellet ain’t no bull poop! Dropped mine at 62 yards. Which IS pushing it. I’d say it’s the absolute max, and admit a tad irresponsible. But this one dropped.
I won’t shoot that far again, but it was good science.

Haven’t hunted turkey in years. It was a fun challenge.
Talent hits a target no one else can hit; Genius hits a target no one else can see.
Re: Spring Turkeys
Freezer looks like you are well equipped for the season
CPJ you are probably tagged out for the season. I’ve been turkey hunting for a lot of years and not heard of a 60yd shot even with 10ga. With .410 that’s one for the record book congrats!
Alas there is no AZ spring season. I miss that still have my slate and cob call.

Nope.
We can get two.

Re: Spring Turkeys
We decided to go to the Castle blind last evening to listen for turkey and find out where they're roosting. I got a couple wraps and libations and drove out to be mine. After settling in, that blind is as comfortable as my living room, I made a few purrs and clucks. A half hour later, two hens and a tom came in at 50 yards. We didn't have any decoys out, and I believe they were more interested in getting to their roost, which, is a hundred yards from the blind. We'll scout a couple other areas later this week. I have a pop=up blind I want to set. Turkey opens next Saturday.
Turkey season opened late this year by about three weeks, the hens have been laying their eggs already.

Freezer did you take a big bird on the opener?
Re: Spring Turkeys
No, but the season is young. It was a chilly, rainy morning, so we went to the castle blind. We heard a number of gobblers all around us and had a couple of hens come in, but nothing to shot at. We can't hunt Sunday, and for the first two weeks we can only hunt until noon. In addition, turkey season started late this year and some of the hens are in their nests already. It might be a little slow this year. I have a pop-up blind I'll set one evening this week.
