Apex predator (tax collector)

Post by Orchidman »

Figured this would be the best place for this as it involves a hunt and successful kill for the participants....... :D

Out doing a charter today, didnt bother putting a bait down for snapper, but looking at the sonar, I could see plenty of sign of Kingfish.
Out with my trusty jig rod, attach a 300gramm blue and white jig and on the 3rd drop I hook up to a Kingfish. After about 5 minutes of long runs ,retrieving line then losing it again I finally had him beat and got him coming up the side of the boat about 3metres down.
Nek minit, a large blue/white shape came streaking in, opened its mouth and swallowed the 15kg kingfish tail first.....leaving me with just the head....

Every now and then, us humans get a reality check on whats out there hunting the same food we hunt...this was one of those times...his jaw was big enough to scare the crap out of me.... .

Sucks you lost dinner, but that is still pretty cool to see

As much time as you have spent on crazy seas and fishing, it must have been something else to scare you. 30 lbs of fish in one bite is impressive and scary when you think of it taking 30 lbs of us in a bite

I've had similar happen fishing off the public pier in Gulf Shores Alabama.
The MAIN difference being not getting to see the "tax collector" fighting a fish, then the line would go slack. Figure the fish got off, but then just reel in the head.

Also had a pod of dolphins start hanging around to try and eat the "out of season" redfish we were throwing back while fishing off-shore. Deck hand started throwing them off opposite sides of the boat. He'd throw one off the port side, as far as he could throw it, and the dolphins would head over to that side. The next went off the starboard, and at least had a fighting chance to escape
