When you have good friends…

Post by Wambli Ska »

My buddy just got the new Garmin Chrono and I asked him if I could borrow one of his 3 units so I could work on the 45-60 load.

He said sure come by the house. We went into his man cave he pulls this off the shelf and he goes, “Keep it, just sitting there and I’ve never used it.” 🤣🤣🤣

I guess I don’t have to buy one anymore. No more guessing.

Anyone running one of these?
I’ll be reading the instruction manual tonight. Tips?

Big blessing! Now I can use the money on more components. He’s very interested in my project 😁

The checks I have done with mine compared to a cheap optical chronograph have shown them to be very close together. My issue with the Magnetospeed is that I have to burn up extra components since I cant test velocity and group sizes at the same time.

That's a generous friend right there.

I have had a Magnetospeed on long term loan from a friend and like others have said, it seems to work pretty well. The frustration being not being able to chrono and shoot for groups at the same time. My method has been to shoot for groups, and THEN chrono the selected load personally.

Yep.
If I’m working up a load it’s getting shot over the chronograph. Two birds one stone.

Why is it that you can't shoot for targets while using this thing?
(I'm already picking the spot on my forehead I'm going to bump for having to ask.)

Mounting the sensor (for lack of a better word) directly on the barrel changes the barrel harmonics potentially affecting groups and POI.

Yep, I see it…. But, free and for my current purposes, perfect.

And I can borrow his new Garmin any time I need it so… 👍👍

OK, that makes sense.

If it were me, I'd probably point the chrono'ed rounds at a target and put an * by the results.

An experiment to determine just how much the extra weight affects groups perhaps?

Science?

With my 6.5x55, 6.5 cm, and 6.5 Grendel it's a shift of about 6" up and usually results in odd shaped groups compared to how the same loads normally shoot. With the little .458 it shifts about 8" down and scatters the shots.

I have one. It works as advertised and is going to be for sale soon.

Don't try the Garmin or you'll never go back.

Not a bad idea. Most of the loads I’ll be working on for the near future I’ll be looking for a specific velocity first and then fine tuning just a little for consistency and THEN accuracy. There is a method to the madness, trust me.

The 45-60 in particular all I need is good enough to ring a 6” steel offhand at 100 yards consistently. Not going to be sweating sub MOA on this gun, not the purpose for it.

Oh I’m getting a Garmin, but when I do it’ll be a business expense… 😁
