Things have to be done. I was mainly trying not to cut my friend… unlit smoke and all… things happened too fast…

So.... my account of War Pig!

Zee spotted a big pig across a feedlot. We gathered up our gear, climbed over the gate and began a stalk. As it started, we were about 400 yards away and needed to get in closer so we could make better shots. The pig started moving away from us but we were slowly closing in. Half way through the stalk, a bull got curious and started heading straight for us. Zee said, "This would be really funny if it was someone else!" while the bull started closing in. Me, with full knowledge that I was the slowest runner in the group, tactically positioned myself in a straight line with the bull... and Zee in the middle.

Now I hear Zee's holster unsnap. Zee starts making a bunch of grunts and noises. The bull keeps closing in, got about 30 yards away from us, then turned away. So yes.... we watched Zee stare down a bull and win.

We continue the stalk... pig is still heading away from us. Finally, we got within 125-150 yards and we get into position. This is a feed lot so we want to make darn sure we don't hit any cows. Once my scope is turned on, thinking it was a calf or something, I ask "what the hell am I seeing?". The answer was that it was a coyote. Basically, this pig had a coyote dancing around it like they were best buds. Anyway, back to the pig.... Chris has a .223, me and Joe are using 6 ARC. Zee instructs me and Joe to go for a shoulder shot while Chris goes for the head. Zee does a countdown for a synchronized shot, our rifles all report simultaneously and the pig drops in his tracks. Looking back, it was a very quick, clean kill. He was probably dead before the report from our rifles even reached his ears.

When we approached the pig, it was notable that he was a big one. He had some nasty leg wounds that had healed, and he had a huge set of balls.... little did we know!

We get our gear back to the truck, then Chris, Zee, and Joe grab the cart to retrieve him while I guard our equipment. They make their way back surprisingly faster than expected with the improved Jacksoneered mod pig cart. We get a few photos, load him on the truck and head back to the ranch.

Back at the ranch, we get photos, and weigh him in at 194 pounds. Then there is gutting and butchering.

Right away, they found a buckshot pellet near his spine. . So with the big balls, the wounded legs that healed, and being hit with buckshot in his spine, I started to think this pig was some kind of warrior.

Tonight, I started to butcher him further. Embedded in one rib, there was another buckshot pellet. I fished it out, took pictures and showed the boys and went on my way. Then I got started on the ribs for the other side.... more buckshot! This time it was between the ribs but healed over. How the hell does that happen unless he was shot at both sides? This was a true warrior pig. He was a badass!

Like the warrior that he was, he went in a blaze of glory after we defeated his bull sentry and scared off his guardian coyote. In his last moments of life, he even said, "F-U" and tried to catch one of those wuss .223 poodle rounds with his lips.

That was a bad ass pig. Rest in peace War Pig! May I honor you with culinary excellence.

As to the bull, while we are closing on the pig, I hear a bull bellowing. I look, and here he comes towards us. Cross wind. As he gets closer, I remember saying, “This aint Buddy (the ranch bull)”. Meaning, he likely wasn’t coming over for a ball scratch. He gets closer and I tell the guys to get behind me. I start hissing at him and he keeps coming, bellowing and unhappy. I start bellowing back at him and he circles. Unsnap my flap holster. Closer. Draw my revolver. Closer.
Plan was, if he charged, my first shot was snake shot and I was going to shoot at his legs. If that didn’t work, the next real round would be at his feet. If that didn’t work……….i was goi g to outrun the guys…….who couldn’t see in the dark like me.
Fortunately, he got down wind of us finally and didn’t like the smell of Butt Jerm.
So in the end, Jerm actually saved us from becoming pasture pancakes

Only bone that bullet hit was a rib on entry and it ended up being the prettiest of the two bullets we actually caught.
The other one hit heavy shoulder bone on entry and heavy bone on exit. We found the jacket and lead pieces under the hide on the off side. Think that the first autopsy I posted above.

All the other bullets exited.
