Clamp on Muzzle Brake

Post by Diver43 »

Has anyone used one. I have a couple rifles, mainly a Rem 700 .223 that I purchased several years ago from a forum member. Would a clamp on brake work?

I see a metric poop of things that can go wrong with them.
IF the taper of the brake matched the taper of the barrel, then I could see it working ok.
Thats never gonna happen. It may not hold, it may allow the bullet to hit the brake if it’s cock eyed.

I wouldn't do it, but that’s me.

Short answer is no. They might work for a few rounds but you have to make sure it’s TIGHT! They will
Move around they really aren’t worth it.

I’ve never used one. Haven’t had the balls.
A decent smith will thread your barrel for $75-$150. Any more than that and they better use KY.

Make sure you paint it bright orange so that you can find it downrange.

So some I looked up require you to give barrel dimensions.
I 98% believe those would be fine.
But, they are the same or in some cases twice the pride it would be to have the barrel threaded. So….

I think that’s a threaded barrel and the clamp is just to time the brake.

Looks like I missed a detail. That explains a bit.

That's what I was looking at. It's the .223 I bought from BigDan several years ago. 10ish I think. Living in Miami I didn't shoot it much. Didn't seem very accurate until I figured out it has a super slow barrel twist. 52 Gr ELD-M put three in one hole the other week. I had swapped scopes and had not shot it since. Shot three at 50 to see where it was and was shocked. Mr. Z convinced me to put a brake on my .308 and I enjoined watching holes appear on the target. Now I want more of them thanks to Z and CPJ. Heading on vacation so when I get back will find a gunsmith to thread the barrel.

Correct...the barrel is stepped down and threaded ....If I recall the installation was $100.00 or so
