Long boi bullet mold
Re: Long boi bullet mold
Set the temp to 725, ran the mold by feel. When the sprue plate didn’t need to be whacked with my dowel rod to cut the sprues, it was pretty decent. When it got too easy, I blasted it with compressed air and cooled it. Seemed to work.
Lead temp started within 30-ish degrees of the set point, which is miles better than just using the built in controls.

Weighing a handful they came out at 231 grains plus. None under 231. A few tenths plus on a crappy little scale, meh. Perfection.

Re: Long boi bullet mold
I'm leery of shooting lead "whisper pickles" (LOVE that name BTW and am stealing it) through my whisperers.
I normally use Li'l Gun, which is sort of a "hot" powder in my experience and worry about a build up of lead in the cans, gas port, blocks & tubes
My form 1 one cans I can disassemble and clean, my "sto bought" one I can't
Even my "sto bought" 22RF can can be taken apart for cleaning.
I'll be assembling some with Hornady seconds 190 Sub-X in the not too distant future.
I'll test Hodgdon's suggested 8.3gr of Li'l gun and tune it to hopefully get 1050-1075fps from both 16" barrels

Re: Long boi bullet mold
yeah, I agree. Perfection. They look great!
My Uncle used to cast bullets for a black powder rifle. He kept a little burner to the side that would blacken the dies before pouring the lead. Do you do the same?

Re: Long boi bullet mold
I use a wooden match to blacken mine. Theres a few specific products for the purpose, but the Lee book said to use a match. Thats what I did when I started some 20 years ago, and it works.

Didnt consider that aspect. My currently incarcerated can doesnt come apart to clean. There shouldnt be too much crap, since Ill be powder coating and running slow. But its something to watch for.

Re: Long boi bullet mold
The powder coating SHOULD help prevent it. Never used powder coated "boolits", so can't say for sure though

Re: Long boi bullet mold
Well it certainly eliminates any other lube method such as regular old lube or liquid alox. I had considered the alox because its easy. Not now.

Re: Long boi bullet mold
IDK, couldn't you run them through a lubrisizer after you pc them?
Or would that scratch the pc off?

Re: Long boi bullet mold
It seems to be a pretty common practice among the bullet painting crowd. The PC has the ability to survive the fire and fury of a trip down the barrel that begins with a .001" to .002" swaging. The sizing die is merely a smoother version of same.

Re: Long boi bullet mold
Yep. Run em right on through. Works just fine.
Just whipped this up to do the PC. Not needed, and may not work as good as the traditional way of coating: tossing them in a cool whip tub and shakey shakey.
But, I’ve got the PC set up, let’s try it. Science. It won’t get the tips (just the tips) as they are poking out the bottom. But the tips ain’t touch anything…

Re: Long boi bullet mold
Fail. Powder coating suffers from the faraday effect, holes, inside corners, or bullets lined up side by each essentially repel or at least don’t attract the static charge as well as a flat piece or item without the aforementioned features. So the “inside” surface of the bullets didn’t get coated. I could do it by using less bullets per setup, but meh.
But, maybe not. I’ve got nothing better to do, may as well try.

Maybe line them up instead of a 5 by 5 matrix.

The method I used. It really doesn’t need to be any more complicated than this. But people make it such.

Re: Long boi bullet mold
There's a good chance of that. If he's using strictly jumbo-sized semi truck wheelweight, I have no idea what the composition of those is. The standard auto weights run in the 12 BHN hardness range, which is leaning to the "won't expand at his speeds" side of the equation.
HOWEVER. . .a lot of guys dilute their wheelweight 50/50 with pure lead to get about 9-10 BHN. That's the hardness equivalent to the cores of jacketed pistol bullets with the bonus of a wee little bit of tin and arsenic from the wheelweight. Basically, that's on par with the old 20-to-1 lead/tin ratio which expands beautifully at Blackout speeds.
Coat 'em, size 'em to .309-.310, and ask a pig how it makes him feel.

Re: Long boi bullet mold
Oh, there won’t be any expansion. But I’m betting a .308 sized hole in a squirrels head will change its status to unalived with aplomb though.

Re: Long boi bullet mold
How much residue if any will that leave in the barrel? Powder coating is some sort of plastic, isn't it?
I remember years ago when folks were using moly (molybdenum disulfide) coating and dansak(tungsten disulfide) that was applied in a tumbler. People claimed that the barrel fouling was hard to remove. Just wondering if the heat of firing would cook this coating to the barrel and create something worse than lead fouling?

Its may leave something, but I have never noticed it. Its a great alternative to traditional bullet lube

Re: Long boi bullet mold
If you're going to call them "whisper pickles" you need to coat the next batch a dark green. I still say what you have now is "Whisper Lipstick" So you'll be putting lipstick IN a pig
