Eyesight problems........

Post by Orchidman »

On Thursday I was up at the horse farm to stay the night, do pest control with the thermals and then on friday accept 80 'dried off' milking cows that were going to be grazed until next milking season. Stayed out till 3am chasing possums/rats/rabbits then grabbed a couple of hours sleep before going to set up to receive the stock. Got the stock settled into their paddocks and while riding the quad back I suddenly started seeing 'Lightning' type flashes in my perpheral vision ( Right eye)
Scared the crap out of me!!
Driving home after dark, they got worse .......Slept overnight and they diminished but were still there. Looked it up on the interwebs and found out that it could be caused by a few things including a retina that was detaching. And the advice was to get to an eye specialist asap.
Duck shooting sunday and they were still there but not as bad as the 2 previous days.
Today I managed to get an appointment with my eye specialist....the next appointments were out to 2-3 weeks but when I explained the symptoms to the receptionist she cancelled someone else and I went in at 3pm today.

Explained to the Doctor what I was experiencing and he carried out a series of tests, then followed it up with numerous questions on just about everything.

The prognosis after all this is that I have to have an operation on my right eye......its called an 'Optorectomy'. When I asked what was involved The specialist, who knows me well, said its to sever the canal that runs from my eyes to my anus and it will cure me of my poop outlook and attitude about woke people........Just kidding.
He actually said that the fluid behind my eyes was moving as I age and that it can start to tear/rip the retina.....but there was no sign of that happening and that the fact the flashes are diminishing is a very good sign. I only have to go back if the flashes increase etc....

Did I say it scared the crap out of me?

Going to celebrate the good news by heading out duck hunting next weekend ( which is our last weekend for ducks 2024).

Getting old isn't for sissies.

The fluid in my cornia's vary from day to day. Messes with my vision. I can set the eye piece on my binoculars today and it may be different tomorrow. I got a pair of prescription glasses last year. Sometimes I can see better with and sometimes without.

I agree with the getting old bit.... :D
I have the same problem with both bino's and thermals.
I used to have cornflakes for breakfast accompanied by the 'Snap, Crackle and Pop' ....Now I get the latter just getting out of bed and when I do have cornflakes I dont hear the sounds.... :?

Been there
Spots and flashes. Went to a retina specialist and after an exam eyes dilated in dark room. Dr explained it was a separation of the retina from the vitrea and as people age it will happen in likely both eyes. Follow up exams to make sure no retina damage but no treatment or drugs needed. It cleared completely in about 4 months.

On that note, I think I'm pretty much screwed.

All the slow decay of age pretty much sucks, but none of it feels as much like death as the eye-related stuff. I've got what looks like some weird old retinal tears that appear to be healed which made my docs looking at the scans go "huh" and we've decided to just monitor them since they appear to be stable and not doing any harm. The presbyopia which kicked in in the mid-'40's for a firearm instructor and armorer is pretty much hell - as many rapid trips as my vision needs to make from far to middle to near distance, the forced reliance on multifocal glasses has gifted me with sporadic mild headache and nausea for about the last 8 years. No... not a fan.

Arthritis in the thumbs - that's another one. Those opposable thumbs are a big chunk of what make us human, and when they start to go, you begin to feel. . . less than that. I've chosen my life path specifically NOT to have to dress up in suits, but they are sometimes a necessity. Picked out a new one and some accessories yesterday. Buttoning up a new shirt shouldn't hurt, but here we are. :|
WWJMBD?

I believe we should stand on Ceremony. . . while our friends handcuff the sanctimonious little prick and take him away.

I can see you a mile away. Just not 2 feet in front of my face.
Thank God we’ve gone to target focus and RDS. Them front sights are a might bit blurry. 😎

Since i went thru a lot of what some of you are experiencing , maybe what worked for me will help someone here, Progressive lenses, i didnt need glasses until i was in my 60s and than just for reading, prog lenses drove me nuts headaches double vision, got lined bi-focal no more problems, as i got older vision got worse and i learned a new word CATARACTS , if you have them do something about it, 3 years ago i had then removed the difference in color was unreal and my vision went back to 20/20 without glasses ,i renewed my DL and passed the eye test with no glasses endorsment on my DL i was 83 at the time, I still need glasses for reading.
Hope this helps some of you

Glaucoma can be treated with smoking marijuana. I don't know about your problem. Or so I've heard.

That exactly mirrors my experience....apart from the macular degeneration.

Now my eyesight causes headaches for BH and the conversations go something like this.....
"There is a deer sitting under that tree" ( pointing finger at a buck sitting in the shade)
"Which tree"?
"The big bushy Titree next to that green patch of grass"
"I cant see it"
"Get your bino's out"
Waits......waits....waits....
"How the hell did you see that"
"It stood out like dogs nuts"
"You really piss me off"!
" You should get your eyes checked like I did"

The first condition is called Rectal/Octitis. My is a special form of that condition, Acute Occupational Rectal/Octitis, I can't see my a$$ going to work on occasion.
Trust me, I know, as spoken by a man with rectal/pharyngeal simalitis. It's when your Larynx resembles your rectum and every time you open your mouth you talk crap.

Glad to hear your improving. I agree, getting old is not for the weak. I was 45 when I started wearing glasses. Last weekend while at the range, a friend handed me his pistol, I got half a mg down range when I set it on the bench. I couldn't see the sights and target, Cataracts.
