Frustrated and need help!

Post by Freezer »

I've shown you my Argentine Mauser project before. It started its second life as a gunsmith student's project. He extended the tang and fabricated a thumb tang safety for it. He used what appears to be a Weatherby/Hawa trigger and some modifications. Teach started the next part of the restoration and did a fair job after 10 years. The stock was an abortion from a 98 Mauser, so I bought a Boyd's At-One stock and gave it to a gunsmith friend. He wasn't in good health, but had it almost right before he died. The stock need a lot of modification because of the tang safety. I wasn't happy with the safety, not positive or dependable, and the trigger was too light at 15oz with creep.

I took it apart today, cleaned, sanded and polished the safeties contact points and found the adjustment screw behind the trigger effected the safeties travel. There are three screws in front of the trigger, and I made a mistake a last weekend of messing with them. Now, though, the safety is working well, it will not cock. I've tried to find this trigger and instruction on the net, but to no avail. Which screw does what on this trigger?

And no, I'm frustrated enough with this gun I don't need to hear, don't F with it. Too late! In addition, I can't find a gunsmith within an hour's drive of my house. I have the tools and trigger pull gauge. I have pondered buying another stock, Timney trigger, then cut and file the extended tang off, but I'll be in another $500 for a rifle whose need is in my past. I'm just frustrated with this project!

Never mind, I got it!

It's amazing what a little whine, I mean wine can do. Frustrated, I came downstairs, poured a glass of wine, whined on the computer then looked at the TV. My wife is watching a Middle Ages flick about England. There were girls kissing girls, guys kissing guys... then there was other stuff too

I had enough, poured another glass of wine and went back upstairs, took the rifle out of the safe and went back to work. I removed the trigger from the action and studied it. After some tinkering, I figured it out! The safety works well and very positive, there is a minor amount of creep that I like and a trigger pull of 2 lbs 13.4 oz.

I like it! A little whine, I mean wine goes a long way!

Glad you got it figured out

Man! Someone really got medieval on those screws.

The student opened the top of the trigger, drilled and tapped the bottom of the receiver to attach the trigger. It works. I've never seen a trigger with four adjustment screws before.

I shouldn't have said creep, there is minor take-up. Just a little movement before the resistance.
