Some old ammo I found interesting

Post by JunkCollector »

Hey you guys know I'll pick up most anything if it's cheap enough.
10 bucks with the caseguatd holder included was cheap enough.

What I found most interesting are the 280 Ross cartridges.
Gee never heard of that one.
Quite an interesting one to boot way ahead of it's time.
Zee check out the bullets.....not bad for 100 years ago Eh

The others are 32 remington another pretty unabtanioum cartridge now.
Then some 35 remington.....really need to get rid of that with all the brass and ammo now I'm apt to pick a gun up otherwise.

Hope you find the old Ross and old bullet styles interesting too.

Interesting old cartridge! You need a Remington 141 in 35 REM
Absolutely love mine and it’s kind of right up your ally.

So, if you find a .280 Ross, are you potentially buying?

One of those interesting quirks of history: Nations deciding that something 7mm-ish was "THE ANSWER" but not adopting it.

The Ross ended up as a .303 because of WWI

The British P-13 ended up as the .303 P-14 because of WWI.

The Garand won out over the Pederson partially because McArthur said "The new rifle needs to be in .30-06", and Garand did more homework for both cartridges.

The FN-FAL / L1-A1 was going to be 7mm-ish until Uncle Sam ram-rodded the .308 down NATO's throat.

Now we have this new Sig thing. We'll see how that lasts. . .

Apparently for a sporting cartridge the 280 Ross delivered more than the bullets of the day could withstand.

The British round for the P13 was much the same - overheating, barrel wear, jacket fouling, etc... Probably would have been awesome with J4 jacket material and Hodgdon Extremes, but I doubt it would have looked much different on paper than the .270 Win or .280 Rem.

Cool find!! Old ammo is as neat as old guns that go with it!

That was interesting! Rifles in that caliber should be found in Canada and Europe.

Here you go! A nice 280 Ross to go with the ammo.

Yeah I don't see that in my future.
Probably send them off with some other oddball cartridges I'll never use.

The .280 Ross was a sporting round but never really took off so examples are rare. Some Ross military rifles were shipped over to the U.K. for Home Guard use in the last war along with P17's.
