Scope Kote and Gun Socks

Post by Zee »

Do you guys use them?
I have become a big fan of scope covers as opposed to flip up caps. I’ve broken so many scope caps, it’s like I have a vendetta against them. Enter the neoprene scope covers. They are durable and protect not just the lenses. They keep dirt off the scope and out of the crevices.

And work particularly well on a UTV when riding around in dusty situations. Slip off easily and are rather long lasting.
I’ve also become a fan of gun socks.

Great for travel when I don’t need a case. Protect the firearm from minor scratches and moisture. And double as a dust preventer.
I also use the silicon impregnated version for storage.

For work, I have some heavy duty scope/muzzle protectors. I’ll have to get a pic.

Anyone else use these options?

For long term storage I use the silicon impregnated gun socks, and they've worked like a charm. I haven't used scope covers as much but I definitely see the advantages of them.

Leupold scopes used to come with the neoprene covers.

I have neoprene covers on scopes. Generic ones work as well as the $40 Leupold ones. I also use rubber bikini lens covers when I hunt. Easy off when needed, cheap if I lose one, keep water/dirt/snow off the lenses. For storage I tossed all my “socks” and switched to the Midway heavy plush fleece cases. They are thick and protect the guns not just from safe dings but as you said they are protection enough that I don’t need a case when just headed to the range. When Midway puts them on sale they are usually sub$10 in all sizes from handguns to long guns so I just order whatever sizes I need. Pretty much every gun I own lives in one. Also never had a gun rust in one.

My safe is full, so every rifle lives in a sock to prevent scratches and dings. Have one neoprene scope cover and will probably get more

Gun (silicon impregnated) socks on all the collector rifles.......Working rifles are mostly plastic/stainless so dont worry about dings etc. Got a few neoprene scope covers......

Dont have any pink rifles though.....

Own a lot of socks for storage, but not for deployment like you're doing. Maybe if sufficiently loose

Swear by Butler Creek flip caps. Think I've only killed one of many, and replacements are cheap.

Swear AT Leupold Aluminas. Damn things won't screw down tight to where they won't rotate, and they open far too easily on their own. Had to glue several of their magnets back in, but that's a tiny complaint compared to the other two. Utter frustration should not cost so much.

Scope covers - never used them. Seems like an easy thing to lose.

I have used the scope covers and I use gun socks but I had a composite stock, like a bell and carlson but I bought it used so I am unsure of the brand, get really sticky. I have tried to fix it but I haven't found anyway to do it. I don't know if the stock would have done that without the sock but I won't use a sock on that kind of stock anymore.

I think it was Browning and Winchester had this issue with the Dura Touch stocks. If it is that call the maker and they will replace it.

If all else fails, clean a small corner with rubbing alcohol, I had that work with a non gun product before

They don’t work well on Hogue Overmold stocks either.

Just threw one of those in the trash yesterday while doing my ongoing cleanup, and it’s not my first. They are impossible to keep clean, dirt and all sorts of abrasives stick to them. You can’t paint them and you can’t put them in anything fuzzy for storage. Probably one of the industries worst ideas.

I guess I use my guns. 😁

They make larger size socks that slip off easily. But, I’m not referencing carrying them around in a sock. Just for transport/storage.
I guess if something the size of your scope is easy for you to lose, there is always the lanyard method. Than with that in mind. You might want to tie your phone to your body and get a chain for your wallet. 😘

Hey, what's wrong with the chained wallet and the big ring of keys attached to a belt loop?!

These are my favorites. I also bought a box of heavy duty tags at Office Depot and thread the string the come with though the end of the case using an upholstery needle I bough at Walmarts. Then I write what's in it on the tag so when I'm going through a pile of guns I don't have to guess what's in each case.

I used to use the skinnier ones from Midway. But, they are a pain with scopes rifles. I’m phasing those out for all but shotguns or iron sights. Going to the larger ones from Amazon as they are loose and easy on/off. I store most all my rifles upside down. Either way, I leave the very end of the butt stock sticking out, so I know what rifle I’m looking at.

Nice! Good Idea leaving part of the stock out. Mine get piled like cordwood into safe's so that won't work for me, but I look forward to having a gunroom with racks again someday and at that point I'll be able to do that.

Seems like a classic Mk 1, Mod 0 zippered soft case in your vehicle rack would be more to the point. Protects the gun AND the optic with no real added time to deploy. If your pest control problem is such that you expect to be diving out of the Huey on a hot LZ, whatever your norm is to have around the gun will be off the gun anyway.

Since your new stainless Ruger is constructed such that you can handled most daily cleaning adequately with compressed air, I'd probably stop at the aforementioned Butler Creeks and skip the wubbies entirely.
