Guess I need to build a 6 ARC!
Guess I need to build a 6 ARC!
Don’t really want to build one in a gas gun. Don't want one in a full size short action bolt rifle.
I might eventually have a gas gun from the show store. Until then, I’m leaning to a 20” SSK barrel for my Encore.

Oooo, that's interesting!
You need to build it, you have the batteries now you need the toy!

Re: Guess I need to build a 6 ARC!
I have been debating rebarreling a Howa mini in 6.5 Grendel to 6 ARC. I only have one 50 count bag of Starline brass though. You probably have as much 6 ARC brass as I have 6.5G brass. That is some dirty brass though.
Re: Guess I need to build a 6 ARC!
What’s it going to do that a .243 won’t?

Re: Guess I need to build a 6 ARC!
Be slightly more economical to shoot. Comparing 6.5 CM to 6.5G I generally use about 20gr less powder in the Grendel than the CM. Sure its not the same powder in some cases, but you get more rounds per pound of powder either way. I can push the CM about 400 fps faster than the Grendel with 129gr bullets. For comparison the Grendel is going as fast or faster in some cases than Hornady book loads for the 6.5x55. If you are loading in a bolt gun the 6 ARC can be loaded to within 100 fps of .243 if I recall correctly.
We could also argue whats the 6CM going to do that the .243 wont? Its about the same difference as ARC to .243. Im guessing that puts 6CM about on par with 6mm Remington.
The more they come out with new fangled 6mm and 6.5mm cartridges, them more bullet options come out. .243, .257, .264, and .284 bullets really seemed to stagnate for a long time until some of the new hot stuff cartridges started coming out. I guess we have to include the .277 in this as well. Crap, I meant to say 6.8mm.......
Re: Guess I need to build a 6 ARC!
If it were necked installed in a .308 length action that would let you seat heavy bullets long, and maybe necked up to 6.5, it might make for a dandy little Mannlicher-stocked carbine.

Be less of a 6mm cartridge.
A neutered .243. You could call it a .243 Blackout, almost.
Big fat meh to this idea.

Re: Guess I need to build a 6 ARC!
I’m not crapping on the ARC, it makes great sense shoved into an AR, especially for a night time pig gun. Or a Howa mini action.
In a TC? Meh.

Re: Guess I need to build a 6 ARC!
Howa makes the 6 arc in their mini action. There is one at the shop that is stupid light! That would make me buy one for sure!
Re: Guess I need to build a 6 ARC!
When you get me a time share upper and free ammo, I’ll run it in an AR. If I’m handloading and slinging brass into the dark, I want my brass back. Dont want to spend a lot of money on a platform like a Howa barreled action and chassis. So, easy button is a TC barrel.

But in a TC, it does zero…less actually, than a .243 can do.Zee wrote: ↑Sat Sep 21, 2024 4:23 pmWhen you get me a time share upper and free ammo, I’ll run it in an AR. And, you ain’t running a TC at night.
But go ahead, castrate the .243.

Re: Guess I need to build a 6 ARC!
I figure if he's castrating the .243 anyway by shooting it from a pistol-length barrel, he's probably better off with the smaller case and faster powders.
Given that the vast majority of our game critters die inside of 200 yards, it ain't always about faster/flatter/farther.
But what's with the .441" case head?

And yes, it IS about faster flatter farther. Because he despises the .300 blackout. Which he says is a castrated .308.
Like this is a castrated .243.
I’m just about the shaming of the midget here dude, keep up.

The .441 case head is because it's based of .220 Russian/6.5 Grendel.

Hey. . .the cartridge is less than 70 years old. I can't shame what I don't comprehend.
And the .308 is a castrated '06.
Hell, the .243 is a castrated 6mm/.244 Remington.
I guess by this logic, the .41 Magnum is just a castrated .416 Rigby.
Besides, it's 2024. . .castration is acceptable now.
This is getting to be a complicated matrix - determining the testicular attributes on one's ammunition.

Free ammo is good, you have a .243 that rocks though.

This is too funny...Just saw this post.
I didn't think the Contender could handle the 6 ARC, but SSK makes barrels for both the Contender and the new SSK-50.
FWIW you could use a TC pistol or carbine at night for pigs..
Just the fact you say you can't is a subtle/sneaky way to have him do it...

It’s not worth it for him to do it. The only “challenge” he’d be up for is using a knife. He’d also have to put an ARCA rail on the TC in order to use the tripod, thermal, etc.Ernie wrote: ↑Sat Sep 21, 2024 6:27 pm This is too funny...Just saw this post.

Because “we” know how well trying to use a platform/plate thing on a tripod works.

You are all trying to figure out the mind of a guy that pukes all over the 6.5CM but owns several and has killed a ton of stuff with it.
Tough to unravel the mess in there…

Re: Guess I need to build a 6 ARC!
I’m not going to try to convince a guy I know has TONS of real world experience of shooting, for distance and getting critters, of anything! Get one build one and shoot the crap out of it! Being worried about loosing a few cases when you can haul away a stack like that is not a firm argument though……. And it’s freemium brass to boot!

It will work for big game when you need to kneel, sit or stand and have some time.
I am still going to experiment with a plate (Smaller round one), but with a Game Changer bag, which for me with a specialty pistol is way better than the plate/bipod, but steadier than Arca/Tripod

Re: Guess I need to build a 6 ARC!
Having had the conversation with Zee, looking at load data and BSing, I support his idea.
I believe he said he’s looking at going with around a 20” barrel. The benefit you get with going with the Encore action is, you can load to the higher bolt gun pressure. And the chamber is essentially 6” further back than a bolt gun. Which makes the OAL of the rifle shorter. Shorter, handier, lighter. Suppressor friendly. Should make for a pretty handy tote around gun.
I get his thing with not wanting to go bolt gun. It loses its appeal in a regular length short action. You can just go 243 if that’s the case. And starting over with a new action, like the Howa, means starting with a new footprint, new chassis. More $
I went with the Howa rather than a gas gun specifically for the better ballistics. Essentially having very close to 243 performance out of a true 223 length action, at higher pressure than a gas gun. And I don’t fling my brass into the next county.
I don’t consider the 6ARC a neutered 243. In a gas gun, yes. Looking at book load data, bolt gun loads using 105 grain bullets pick up 300 fps over gas gun loads at max. 2850 fps is what Hornady data says. I have yet to test this. But that’s a lot of speed left on the table.
Other benefits, 6ARC gets that performance using less powder. Less recoil than an 243. Which could be nice in the Encore platform. And, it uses small rifle primers, not large. Large rifle primers have still been more difficult to find, for me. Zee gets free brass. Already has bullets for the cartridge. So, he’s looking at a few hundred for a barrel, then use components he already has on the shelf. Why not?
