Basic Firearms ID

Post by Jayhawker »

I find it interesting...but not surprising...that the rifle used in the 2nd assassination attempt widely reported as an AK47 by everyone...including the Secret Service and the FBI...is actually an SKS with an after-market stock...

That doesn't surprise me, I've seen that going on for years! In this case I believe they were calling it an "AK47 Style rifle". John Q Public knows what an AK is but not an SKS.

I think they should just start saying "an old soviet era bullet launcher" to eliminate any confusion...

Can’t say that people would say “he shot a SCUD at the Trump?”

A bit like the British press. If anyone get shot it's always by a 'Magnum' regardless of calibre.

Was it an SKS-D or one using the Tapco-style mags?

As I said in another thread, to be fair.... one of these would confuse folks:

It’s things for gun nerds to laugh about, but, I don’t expect non gun folks to be experts in firearms ID.

I do like the tape to keep the dust cover mount “stable”

That’s a precision setup there, yo.

Normally. Maybe he’s was trying to emulate one of those rubber thingies that Soviet scopes have on the ocular end?

Bet’cha he can shoot minute-of-golfcart 🤣

Almost as good as the last idiot who bought his ammo over the counter on the way to the assassination attempt…

I mean…say what you will, but that idiot defeated the “top” protective agency in the country, and only failed because the target turned his head.

The “TOP” protective agency in this country is in DEI shambles. They are so far from being an elite outfit it’s not even funny anymore. The fat chick fumbling around with her gun/holster over her muffin top, not knowing if she should holster her gun or fix her glasses told me everything I needed to know before the investigation even started…

We've been lucky overall as a country. A lot of would-be assassins have been so inept.

I'm really not that concerned. My, heart felt, belief is that all the big players know that taking out another ones' leader would start something none of them want.

Might a rogue "bad actor" do it? Of course they might, however I don't see a "state sponsored" attempt in the cards,

I agree with the Poet. Other countries won't try it, mostly out of fear of retribution. But I get CPJ's point.

I think it also shows that even though we as Americans complain a lot about politics and politicians, only the mentally disturbed kill over it.

If you zoom in, there appears to be a grey substance under the rear scope base (J-B Weld?) where it attaches to the rear cover, and you can see meal banding that extends inline with the tape, plus another nubbin in front of the triggerguard. I think those may be hose clamps covered with tape? And the bolt handle has a wad of tape on it.

Most dust cover scope mounts I have seen have a full-length rail on top.

I think this a home fabricobbled setup.

BTW, Medvedev has claimed the guy may have ties to the Ukraine, as he had tried to serve there. But he didn't. He was rejected, partially because he was crazy. And come to think of it, if a foreign nation were to try something like this, wouldn't they use, maybe, a more capable rifle? With this rifle, you'd be better off with iron sights than that abortion of an optics setup. And, why not use a cartridge capable of hits at the actual range encountered? 400 yds. with a 7.62x39?

I’m sure many talking heads have tried to figure out why he did it.
It’s the same reason as Mickey divorced Minnie.
