4.4 mile impact

Post by Ernie »

4.4 Mile Impact...7,744 Yards
It took 69 shots.
I just read the story a few minutes ago.
I don't know any of these guys.
I don't know what determines a world record (Don't really care), but this one is hard to wrap my mind around.
I typically just say, "It's Just Drop & Drift", but I have a hard time imagining this one.
I know I can do 3,000 yards+, and it is one of my future goals, but this distance is out there.
Do I think they actually hit the target? Yes.
Does it have practical applications? Probably not.
I just think it is cool when someone tries to do what has never been done before.
I imagine it was fun doing it as well.
Good Stuff!

COOL!

There's a video floating around where some folks (Aussies, I think), were stretching out the long range volley sights on a circa 1900 Long Lee Enfield. As I recall, they were creeping up on 3,000 yards and were hitting close enough to their target that, yeah, a company of guys all doing that at the same time could create a problem for an dense body of troops in the path of it. Unfortunately, they quit making SMLE's with volley sights around 1916, and those earlier versions are pretty scarce today.

A couple years ago, I got to spend two days learning how to wrench on a Vickers machinegun and study some of the accessories that go with one. Between the nearly foot-tall elevation stalk on the rear sight, the additional elevation you could put on with the tripod, and the various protractors and inclinometers that were available, the Brits had the ability to deliver plunging fire to some pretty ridiculous distances.

So I don't know if a single rifle shot has a whole lot of application, but a belt of 250 of them delivered quickly certainly could. . .but then again, airbursting artillery pretty much phased out that whole concept.
WWJMBD?

I believe we should stand on Ceremony. . . while our friends handcuff the sanctimonious little prick and take him away.

That is incredible! The spotters had to listen for where the bullet hit the ground.

I suppose with enough of those firing, you could create a beaten zone 4.5 miles away. :D
