“Why horseshat! You can’t hit that far with a pistol!”
Says my boomer friend when I set out some hedge apples at 95 yards, telling him I’m going to shoot them with my Glock 43X with RDS.
Took about 15 rounds, but did drill one. (Softball sized) Shooting rested, off the hood of my truck.
I was ALL over them however. As in I’d damn sure not want to be standing in front of me while I was shooting.
So I let him try. I’d also not want to be standing in front of him at 100 yards. He didn’t hit one, but made one extremely nervous. His previous experience with the red dot was 5 minutes earlier, shooting a mag full at 10 yards. Yet he was able to get inches from drilling targets at 95 yards.
RDS for the win.
Interesting side note, the 147 grain ammo hit the same POI as some 115 at that’s distance. Enough you couldn’t really tell, at least.

During a new shooter basic pistol class this lady just could hit the side of a barn consistently. Brand new shooter with husband picked for her S&W 9mm.
My buddy (the ) gave her his ZEV with an RDS. Coached her individually dry firing for 2 minutes, lined up the whole class and asked her to put a round in the middle of a metal silhouette. She rang it 3 times in a row… at 50 yards.
They work…

Well done.

"Tell me what practical use there is for a pistol at 100 yards?"
Nebermind the fact it's about using the sight, trigger oress, and follow through in a more difficult platform. If you can hit it with a pistol at that rang (or worry it) you should be able to do it with a rifle.
Good job!

It's always fun doing things like that...You typically learn stuff at the same time, as you mentioned.

I have a pepper customer that carries 3 concealed guns. A 460 Rowland Glock conversion. A .41 mag S&W that I reblued and I can't remember the third but he is (with all seriousness) preparing for a "crackhead apocalypse" for when society breaks down and feels confident that he'll make 200 yard hits with his Glock, open sights
And for anyone that's never fired a 460 Rowland glock,

It’s not as hard as most people think to hit at ‘long range’ with a normal handgun. The first step is unlearning all the gun shop tropes, fudd-lore, and “conventional wisdom” that we all grew up with and learned as we first got into guns. Then go out and try it. Figure stuff out for yourself, don’t just believe what you heard online or read in the December 1987 Guns &Ammo.
Focus on the fundamentals, and get some trigger time.
And I can tell you that there are a lot of people that are glad that Eli Dicken practiced with his carry gun at long range and was able to connect at distance while under fire.

I figure between no longer having saber toothed tigers to thin out our defective DNA and staring at computer screens all day, most human eyeballs are going to be headed towards the junk heap by our mid-20's.
The way things are going societally, most shooters are going to be past that age by the time they've figured out proper grip and trigger control.
So yeah. . . optics are probably the future for being able to shoot a gun to its mechanical potential, and people that can do it with iron sights will start to be seen as freaks of nature. The technology is becoming more impressive. The human animal, significantly less so.
Even that aside though, figure a good duty pistol is probably an 8-MOA proposition, and it's going to be a challenge to reach that potential at a hundred yards when your full iron sighting apparatus covers about a yard at that range.

I'm not sure what Elmer Keith would say about a RDS but I know why he had that horizontal gold bar inlaid halfway down his front sight.
Re: “Why horseshat! You can’t hit that far with a pistol!”
You're absolutely right. I can hit at 300 yards with my M&P .40 with iron sights. All it takes is practice. A long gun may not be available when it is needed.bullsi1911 wrote: ↑Sun Sep 29, 2024 1:50 pm It’s not as hard as most people think to hit at ‘long range’ with a normal handgun. I know hedge apples we called them hedge balls but..
A hedge apple 95 yds with a handgun is damn good shooting

At 100 yds with a handgun, I'm happy with "I'll bet he ducks" accuracy.
Re: “Why horseshat! You can’t hit that far with a pistol!”
It’s not incredibly repeatable, even with a good shot. At least with that gun.
Basketball sized targets however, that’s a different story.

At 200 which several of us did years ago it was pretty regular to hit a 24-30” (I forget) chunk of steel at 200. But there was an aim point using the stand it was hanging from. 300 with opens? What’s your aim point ?
Not saying it’s impossible, saying we’d need target sizes etc. and at that point it’s artillery fire. 100 yards is dot on target, squeeze trigger.

Now I need to find a place to try this with my slingshot.

I dont know about taking them out, but I want to at least hit one at that distance just to see if I can.Japhy wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2024 6:29 pmDude, if your slingshot takes out hedge balls @ 100yds I want one!Justsomedude wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2024 2:52 pm Now I need to find a place to try this with my slingshot.

You guys are amatures, HvyMax could do that at 1000 yards!

I use .36 cal lead balls as projectiles for mine. They rock accuracy wise and carry quite a distance.Justsomedude wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2024 7:36 pmI dont know about taking them out, but I want to at least hit one at that distance just to see if I can.Japhy wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2024 6:29 pmDude, if your slingshot takes out hedge balls @ 100yds I want one!Justsomedude wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2024 2:52 pm Now I need to find a place to try this with my slingshot.

We use to shoot sage rats all the time. There’s so many of them in some fields it would get boring just shooting them so we would start having competitions. You can eventually hit a lot of things with enough shots to “walk it in”. 100yrds with a handgun easy, find a dirt mound walk it in to find aim point next time a rat shows aim and shoot. Still no guarantee but you’d hit some. 300 to 400 yards with a .22lr got real fun and you burned a lot of ammo for those hits. You’d be aiming so high you couldn’t see the actual target in the scope.
Re: “Why horseshat! You can’t hit that far with a pistol!”
That does it!
Maybe cooler in a week. I’m organizing a 100 yd 1911 shoot with the range buds. I’m thinking $20 entry, 50rds, off hand standing, winner takes the pot. I’m down $20 after the Red Ryder championship Post-Easter marshmallow peep shoot. I figure I’ll sneak in a practice session first I’m going to need an edge.
