Testing the second would be assassin’s SKS

Post by CPJ 2.0 »

Good video with surprising results. If you’re easily offended, I wouldn’t click this. He says words like fudge.

I seriously laughed at the results. Just goes to show you- if it's stupid, but it works... it can still be stupid

I really wish he would have benched it and shot groups with each.

Oh I can beat you hands down in redneckery…. Rubber self-vulcanizing black electrical tape is the shlt!!! The stuff is so much better than duct/gorilla tape. Given enough of it I could build a mall 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Giving this a little further thought. . .

Yeah, anybody who's put any thought and experience into mounting, zeroing, and using a riflescope is going to look at such a thing and say "What a total kludge", but in the context of working with what you have. . .

In A Rifleman Went to War, Herbert McBride related how he couldn't get the WWI-era scope mount on his sniper rifle to stop wiggling, so he jammed a piece of safety razor blade into the junction between the two offending parts and used salt water to deliberately rust it in place.

Similarly, I figure if what you've got is a dustcover scope mount for an SKS, you can tightly attach the scope to the mount, but you're stuck with the loose tolerance between the receiver and the dustcover, which was never intended to hold a sighting system. Immobilizing that junction with a few wraps of tape is probably your best path to consistency. AT BEST, the ammo and rifle combo is probably only good for 2-3 MOA anyway, so this is not as if we're wasting the potential of a Sako TRG-21 by attaching a Tasco.

We can discuss the mindset of who would deliberately choose such equipment for the task of political assassination, but Gavrilo Princip amply proved that you don't have to be smart, just lucky.

I figure the best way to bet a dustcover scope mount to be "stable" is with something like large hose clamps that wrap around the scope and go under the stock. Which, if you zoom in on the photo in this thread that a ruggedly handsome individual provided, you'll see something similar.

See? In seeking some semblance of stability, while I like the idea of hose clamps, I would probably gravitate to hefty zip ties....
