Do you like 10mm? Got a chance to try out a bunch

Post by bullsi1911 »

Had my annual guns/food/ booze trip over that last few days, and it seems everyone showed up with at least one 10mm. Here are the contestants:

Too to bottom: RIA commander sized 1911, my EAA Witness full size, Hi-Point, RIA full-size 1911, Kimber Stainless Target, S&W 610 6”

We shot the snot out of them from 5-85 yards and just had a blast. I ended up benching them all at about 15 yards with the old Ultramax ammo, and tried shooting groups. Here is the outcome:

RIA Commander 1911-

This one hit a bit low for me, but was a great handling and solid little gun. Great trigger.

EAA Witness-

My personal 10. It’s a CZ copy, so I am very used to the platform. Heavy, but soft shooting. I’ve shot better groups with this gun, so I was a bit suspect of the ammo at this point, but it could have been me after a bit of the previous nights overindulgence affecting my groups.

And the one we all wanted to try… Hi-Point 10mm:

This is a sub $200 10mm. It did not jam on me, but the owner had a bunch of stoppages. Big, clunky, a spectacularly unpredictable trigger, gritty slide, and you could feel the slide slowly chunk along when shooting. Vertical stringing of the shots, and the sights were horrid. But… it’s a sub $200 10mm.

RIA full-size-

I was surprised at the group here. This was the first 6 shots from the gun. Great sights and trigger, and I was really impressed by this one. After this, I was able to ring steel with it at 70 yards offhand.

Kimber Stainless Target-

This one scattered the shots. It’s my brother’s gun, so I’ve shot it before, And know it can do better. I’ll blame it not liking the old bargain bin ammo. But it has a good trigger and great sights, and is just a smooth working gun.

S&W 610-

Star of the show. Big, light recoiling, outstanding SA trigger, decent sights, and… it’s an N-frame smith in 10mm! Decent group with crap ammo, then I proceeded to the steel at 80 yards and only missed it twice out of 6 rounds offhand. This one is my brother’s gun as well, and he is going to try and get a deer with it this year. Everyone enjoyed this one and by brother had 2 people offer to buy it off him.

Highlights from the rest of the trip:
-Shooting a 93 year old Swiss K31 for the first time and ringing steel at 300 yards three times in a row with iron sights.
-Henry Frontier .22 suppressed with subsonic rounds. Just stupid quiet. And giggle fun shooting steel at 100 yards.
-connecting on steel at 620 yards with a bunch of different guns, most of them being not-really-made-for-long-range. I was able to hit repeatedly with the PSA KS-47 with cheap spam-can ammo with a 3-9x Primary arms scope, and several LPVO equipped ARs using cheap 55 grain bulk ammo.
-Hard drive “data deletion with 1pound tannerite blasts. It’s pretty amazing how high in the air a hard drive will fly
-Global Ordinance “can launcher” upper. It’s just a hoot.
To make something simple is a thousand times more difficult than to make something complex.

Its a horrible cartridge to shoot. Its so crappy that I had to expand the collection to include a G40 (7" KKM barrel), M&P, Super RedHawk, and a converted GP100. My personal "pet" load is pushing a 180gr FMJ at roughly 1375 fps from the G40 and GP100. I have not checked that load in the M&P or SRH yet. Odd issue but factory loads dont like to eject from the GP100 without a moon clip even though the much hotter handloads fall right out without the use of a moon clip.

I gave up on a 610 after seeing what people were asking for completely trashed examples.

A CZ 97 in 10mm would be a nice option if they ever made one.

Former contestants voted out of the collection include a G29 and DW RZ10. The RZ10 was fantastic, but I shoot 1911s low and didnt want to change the sights for me and risk someone else shooting it at the range and hitting the metal target hangers. It deserved a better home that I was goiving it anyways.

They make sense with full retard level loads in a Glock with lots of them on tap for bear defense, if a more suitable long gun isn’t practical.

FBI’d factory rounds, meh.

In a revolver with a cylinder that’s not sized according to the round (do they even make such) that’s a meh also.

I've got one of the FS RIA's, I like it. Needed a heavier recoil spring and I still need to trim the ejector some more. It throws empties from full powered loads 10-15 yards, straight back. Kansashooter's wife got a scar on her nose from him shooting mine, with her a good ways behind him

This is the one I have and I agree with everything said.

I’ve been on the hunt for a 610 for awhile now someday I’ll find one for a price I’m willing to pay.

Girsan has a 6in 1911 10mm I’ve been eyeing for about a year as well.

Jumped in with a Glock 20 when they were first introduced @1989. This was when "stopping powah" was still a thing, before I learned how to effectively run a DA revolver, and before I understood that .45 Auto loaded with a 230gr flat point at hardball speeds can penetrate a great deal.

Too much steam for quick recoil recovery in a combat gun; not as much steam as the big revolver rounds.

I no longer seriously entertain the idea of hunting with a pistol as the primary.

If I were a cop in Wyoming with an equal chance of facing a bear or an AK-47, I can see the appeal. Aside from that narrow window. . . I guess the round has kinda gone flat on me.
WWJMBD?

I believe we should stand on Ceremony. . . while our friends handcuff the sanctimonious little prick and take him away.

I enjoy shooting mine, it's a 1911 with a halo sight. I don't know that I would want a carry gun but I enjoy it. Grape don't blame me, I was standing beside her when it happened. I don't remember who was shooting and I thought we were far enough away.

My apologies. I remember you shooting it, and her getting hit with the empty and thought they happened at the same time

I have a G40 long slide 10mm that I enjoy handloading for and have taken a couple pigs with. It’s strictly a field gun for me.

I am 10mm curious, but for my practical uses my money is better spent buying more 9mm.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Rather good timing. PSA has the RIA FS 10mm on sale for $400 as a Halloween deal today

Only 10mm I've ever had a desire for was the Ruger GP100 3" that was out a while ago and are now an unattainable dream. I may settle on a 4.2" version at some point.

I'll just leave this here.

It doesn't bother me but she has a long memory, luckily she didn't know who it was. I was trying to buy a RIA when covid hit and they got harder to find. I like what I have so I guess it worked out. I did like how the hc RIA felt in my hand and if I ran across a good deal on one of them I would be really tempted.

A few months back I tried a friends Dan Wesson 10mm
It ran perfectly, great trigger and sights. I could easily hold 2 in off hand at 10yds. Serious sharp recoil with full on factory loads reminiscent of 44 Ruger SBH. It wouldn’t be a carry, I don’t hunt pigs, and haven’t had any griz encounters in AZ so I don’t know what purpose it would fill.

I love my DW Razorback. It’s the perfect gun when I might need a woods walkabout gun and a concealed carry for re-entry into civilization. Hardcast full power loads for field, lighter HPs for SD in town just takes a mag change. Accurate as all get out, cloverleafs with just about any quality ammo.

What’s there not to ❤️❤️❤️
