Remington 81

Post by Elk Creek »

Well crap! I wandered into my LGS yesterday to find a Remington 81 in 300 Savage. Yes, I have to have this rifle! The only oddity is the Griffen and Howe scope base in it. The mount and rings are long gone. The base is attached with 3 screws and two pins into the receiver and it’s only done at Griffen and Howe! This rifle spent all its life in Maine until a week ago when it came to Colorado to my collection!! Anyway any of you wonderful gents have a mount rings?🤣

That’s sexy.
Is that a Browning design?

Yes it is. It uses the same “long recoil” system as the A5. It shares some common parts too!

Now that I'm home I can get a good look at the pics. Dayyum, you really did score high on that one. I'd imagine you can find a lead on the rings and scope via Google.

Those are interesting guns and fun to shoot. I've handled three and the last being a 35 Remington. Great find!

I was thinking that it looked similar to a Win M95 minus the lever

Looks great. A guy who lives in my county collects Model 8s. I don't know the difference between the two, but he did!

A 35 tem would have been great, the 300 sav makes a good western cartridge….

I missed another 300 sav 81 years back, although a bit more rough. This one is not getting away.

This gun and the Marlin 336 chambered in .35 REM were considered the ideal NW woods guns. I remember seeing racks of them in the LL Bean and Kittery Trading Post in Maine when they were still actual “outfitters”.
