Reloading the 7mm RM, Do You Need Magnum Primers?

Post by shotgunshooter3 »

The title says it all. As I start a foray back into handloading, my never ending pursuit of simplified logistics has me begging the question: Do I really need magnum primers for my 7mm Rem Mag, or will standard LR primers suffice?

I will most likely be using H1000 or 4831SC, with 140-165gr bullets. I'm not looking to push things off the reservation, but if I can't get decent velocities (200+ FPS faster than 7mm08) the point of paying the magnum prices over 7mm08 is kind of moot.

Run ‘em’. Your rifle will or won’t like the load but you will be just fine running LR’s in a 7mag…

When I had a 7mm RM I never used magnum primers and never had any issues. Shooting a 7mm WSM now and still don't.

Might lose some consistency and velocity, depending on the particular powder used and ambient temp, but they should go BANG

I'll buck the trend and just start with using magnum primers.

It’s a low volume shooter. Buy a couple hundred primers and it’s a lifetime supply.

I’m not against NOT following the load book in regards to primers, for example my .300 BO. It calls for magnum primers. Finding small rifle magnum primers locally has proved fruitless. So I used regular. Worked fine.

Large rifle magnum seem to be way more available, however.

Same here, SR primers work fine so far

The SR primes I’m using for my 300 loads are from the 1960’s…. Seriously. They go bang, most of the bullets quite accurately too. Winchester 296 is not a hard powder to light….

H1000 and large charges of 4831 are the reason magnum primers exist.

Granted, the 7Rem is not so much larger than .30-06-class cartridges that standard primers wouldn't function, if you're driving for performance, using low octane gas is probably not the place to start.

I have had mild success with standard primers in .300 WM, but found that magnums were more consistent. In my little .458 its magnum primers with hunting loads as a standard primer struggles to have a complete burn with a large dose of 4227. The 6.5-06 is magnums with RL-22 or RL-26 and standard with IMR 4350. Just what the powders seem to prefer.

Unfortunately, I would need LR primers.

I posted that for cpj but they have lr magnum in stock also. I buy almost all of my powder and primers from them but I can pick them up so I don't have to pay shipping which doesn't help you any.
