New gun- anyone know anything about FALs?
One of my best friends died a little over a year ago, and after the estate was settled his brother had some guns left over. He offered a pile of different guns to the group of friends, and I ended up with a DSA FN-FAL that I had helped my buddy set up a bit over 20 years ago.
Since I had played with it, it has had a surefire suppressor host added to it, and the Leupold 3-9 disappeared somewhere along the way. Outside of that, it’s just as I remember it.
Anyone know anything about FALs? I don’t. I just used my buddy as a resource…

The only thing I know that is remotely helpful, besides the fact that that's an awesome gun, is FAL mags have both Metric and Imperial pattern mags out there, and it matters which one you use depending on the rifle.

What do you need to know? There are many variations out there and many "home made" examples, and as SS3 said you need to know metric or Imperial. I believe DSA still makes their own. Good mags are expensive if you can find them and they are just OK on accuracy and nearly impossible to "accurize". Mine is a factory SA Match Gun and the best I've gotten out of it s about 2 MOA at 100 yards with Match ammo. I have not tried reloading for it yet but I will. The first scope I put on it felt like a frustrating waste so it came off, I do just as well with a RDS. Not a lot of accessories out there so this is no AR. Some stock options like folding "paratrooper" styles and that's about it.
All that being said they have a hardcore cult following and that gun on GB for $1,500 would sell swiftly last I checked, the SA's bring about $2000-$3000 if you're willing to wait for a buyer. They are tough as hell and there is a reason it's called the "Right Arm of the Free World", they are a TRUE battle rifle proven all over the world in the harshest environments being handled by folks who are not that far removed from ancestors that ran spears as their main battle weapon.
If your idea of fun is plowing a berm smoking a few dozens orange trap birds strewn all over it with .308 ammo as fast as you can pull the trigger while crazy grinning broadly it's the gun for you, I've done that quite a few times and it usually gets a crowd going at a range. I could probably make money renting the gun out by the magazine. Mine is set up with a military grade red dot and sits with all 10 mags loaded ready for a hoard of zombies to attack my house. Ringing man sized steel to a few hundred yards is easy.
Google "FAL Manual .pdf" and you'll be able to download a ton of military manuals.

I had one, a metric one. They look a lot better than they shoot. A handsome rifle with that long barrel sticking out there. It was a 4" or worse gun, but I don't know if that's typical of the FAL or just my rifle.

With regular MIL SPEC ball ammo that’s about right. Like I said, minute of torso out to about 300 yards.
Re: New gun- anyone know anything about FALs?
Thanks for the info, everyone. Mine is a Metric pattern, it seems. Mostly just looking for any tips, tricks, and.... stuff.
Also, another friend said that he thought it was a build off of an Australian FAL kit (based off the integrated bi-pod)- I know nothing about the different variants of the FAL (Except the Israeli ones with wood furniture look incredibly cool). Any idea on this variant? DSA does not sell anything that looks like this one now.

I've read that the English version had simpler sights and were semi. In the Falklands, where both sides were armed with FALs, the Brits would take over the full autos of their enemies.
The main version of FALs here are metric versions.

I had one back in the early 90s. Accuracy sucked! And I traded it off. I regret that decision now just from the nostalgia aspect.

Re: New gun- anyone know anything about FALs?
The more I read up on them, the more I hear about the lackluster accuracy. Doesn't matter to me, I'm not gonna sell this one. But it does make me think that an LPVO is going to be the choice to go on the rail, though. I wont be going for bughole groups, but more for whacking steel out to 5-600 yards.
Or I could get some Rhodesian brushstroke camo plum-smuggler shorts, tight green t-shirt, a canvas chest rig and cosplay I'm slotting commies in the jungle.

You need a Ridgeback on a leash to make it real
Like Zee said, it’s a gun that at times you’ll question the why, but you cannot deny the strange strong attraction to its inherent outright coolness!!!

There’s really no reason for you to paint that visual. Especially so specifically.

The fact that when you Google "Selous Scouts" this is one of the suggested searches is... hilarious.

THIS is the picture you need to re-create. I’ll wait

Re: New gun- anyone know anything about FALs?
I had a DS sa-58 (fal) with a 16” barrel. The one I had fell into a recall group of soft, non heat treated receivers that had been recalled by DS Arms a few years before I got mine. After seeing some premature wear on the selector groove I contacted DSA to see if that was normal, anyway they fixed the receiver issue but the accuracy was minuet of torso .
Very cool gun, expensive mags, not that accurate but a hell of a lot of fun to shoot and with the gas system reliable as heck. I was made an offer I couldn’t refuse as Obama was taking office for it. I sold it and never looked back.

Maybe I’m going about this the wrong way. If there’s guys that will pay for a woman to fart in a jar and mail it to them, maybe they will pay to see me in a pair of nut huggers. I could be rich!

Re: New gun- anyone know anything about FALs?
For an aside: I read where it took the Brits a year to copy and change the repattern from metric to the British system so they could be built in England.

Re: New gun- anyone know anything about FALs?
Used some Christmas cash to get a Vortex 1-8xLPVO, and mounted it up to the FAL
Used some surplus Australian 7.62 to get it rough dialed in, and ended up being completely surprised by this just over an MOA group at 100 yards
To say I was surprised is an understatement
So, now I need to find some hunting type ammo and dial it in for that. Very excited to see what this can do and see if I can take an axis or pig with it

150gr Rem Core-Loks punch WELL above their weight class, IME
AmmoSeek shows these as the cheapest, and in stock. I am not familiar with these folks though
Edited to change link, first company wanted $38 shipping for a 3 box order to my address
These folks only want $14 for the same 3box order
