Speaking of pipes…. Rescue

Post by Wambli Ska »

Apparently my penchant for not being able to pass on a rescue extends to pipes too. Found this example of a broken nice American made Wellington brand pipe. It was a mess inside and out with a clean broken stem. I won’t detail the process which took a few hours but I’ll give you the before and after view.

So here she is before:

I’m getting really good repairing breaks with commercial crazy glue. My wife spent about 5 minutes under a light with a magnifying glass trying to find the stem repair and she could not spot it at all.

I’m slight addicted to this British show called “The Repair Shop” and if you like working on old stuff it’s a wealth of techniques and info but folks that do this on precious antiques for a living.

I debated polishing the wood and stem to a higher sheen but decided I really still want it to look like a vintage pipe.

Looks really good. I don't know if you plan on smoking from it but keep in mind that cyanoacrylate glue releases cyanide when heated.

I do but I’ll be giving it a few weeks to make sure the cyanoacrylate is fully cured and the stem doesn’t get that hot anyway but I certainly appreciate the advice buddy 👍

You do know that the stems are replaceable?

Yep but since this stem is marked with the pipe brand and matches bowl markings and the diameter perfectly I wanted to save the original.

I looked closely and the break before I took it on and it was clean. I knew that with just a bit of effort I’d make the break disappear.

Thanks! It’s an old pipe probably early 1900s. This ad is from 1919. The pipe was $.50 back then 😂
