Played hooky today… 😎

Post by Wambli Ska »

Decided to play hooky with my kids and headed to the desert to play today. We started warming up with a Ruger Super Blackhawk in .44 mag off hand at 15 yards just to get our feet underneath us. Then we played with, in order:

Rossi 92 lever action in .44 Mag
S&W .460 Revolver
Ruger Vaquero (old) in 44 Mag
Henry lever action in 45-70
Henry lever action in 30-30
Ruger Blackhawk Bisley in .480 Ruger
S&W Performance shop scoped .500
And then topped it off shooting my Son-in-laws new .338 Lapua with night vision scope.

We probably burned close to $1,000 worth of ammo this morning the Lapua is $8 a SHOT for match ammo. He just got all the pieces to start reloading for it except brass, so he picked up some Hornady Match ammo just to make sure it goes bang.

All our shooting was at distance. The 15 yard offhand was just for warmups. The lever actions were shot 100 yards offhand and my daughter nailed a gallon plastic jug of water with her FIRST shot at 100 yards with the Ruger .480 OFFHAND!!! Did I mentioned my baby CAN shoot!!! I nailed the other jug with my Vaquero

My daughter in typical fashion fired EVERYTHING that was on the table and actually outshot the boys offhand at 15 yards with the first Super Blackhawk :smiling_face_with_sunglasses::united_states::bottle_with_popping_cork::clinking_glasses:

The scope on the .338 is fully digital. We “sighted in” the .338 with ONE shot at 390 yards and I’m proud to say my first cold bore shot was on the 10 ring on a rifle I’ve never touched before. 😎🇺🇸🍾🥂

If you can see it, you can hit it 🤣

I have a new love for Henry lever guns. My SIL has matching 45-70 and 30-30. They are NICE!!! Might have ignored them for too long…

Obligatory grandchild shot. Asleep in seconds in grandpas arms at Bass Pro Shop while we picked up the Lapua Ammo. The kid has been to 2 gun shows and BPS in less than a week. That’s how you build a Republican 🇺🇸

Shooting the .338 from a shaky ass table. Anything but steady so we need to improve this setup. Still managed to do well, soooooo. I’m happy.

I had the pleasure of shooting that little guys .338, and im still smiling. With a brake and suppressor it was just fun to shoot. Hitting steel at 700 was pretty easy under his stern guidance.

It’s amazing how well that break tames the recoil!!!

It was! The Rossi was a hoot. Couldn’t miss with it and it LOVES the same reloads as the Vaquero which is great since I have buckets of them 😎

No heavy artillery this morning?
Sounds like boneshaking fun!

That gunlist is a good day for sure.

I’m happy! The saddle ring showed up today so she’s done. Posted a pic on the lever fun thread.

OK, I'm going way off-topic here, but what was the temp where you were shooting? No shade as far as the eye could see. Around my parts, Central Valley in California, the temps have been flirting with 100 degrees for a while. The convection off the desert had to be brutal.

We started early and the temp was 90+ and by the time we left it was over 102 and rising fast! The guns and ammo were kept under a thick blanket in the bed of the gladiator until ready to shoot. We stayed WELL hydrated and I now have a really good tan. Both SIL and daughter are veterans with MANY deployments to Afghanistan, Iraq etc and they have this whole desert thing handled.

That being said a portable shade strategy is on the list of things to figure out swiftly as well as a better shooting platform. It's not getting any cooler or less sunny out there

We seem to be having a lot more boomer days BUT lately because all the later purchases have been large bore toys. I forgot to mention I did bring a single shot Mossberg .22 and a box of CCI CB just to get some giggles out of the kids, which it absolutely did. Strong possibility that I will be modifying that particular gun for my new granddaughter to get her started when the time comes. The baby is 5 months old and already "owns" more guns than many adults since dad and I keep going through the inventory and assigning "stuff" to the kid.

We had a loooong conversation about our common interest in the 50 BMG and some homework to follow...
