McGowan sucks

Post by Justsomedude »

This is more of a PSA for anyone that's going to do a future build.

I've dealt with mostly every barrel manufacturer that you can think of, except McGowan until now. I'll try to keep a long story short(ish)

My buddy built a 416 wildcat that he had chambered in a different barrel for a while. It absolutely always shot like dog poo and he kept asking me to shorten the barrel because he figured he had a harmonic issue due to barrel length (not my call, but his.) I took the cut off piece and did a cerosafe cast to find that the bore was .4185 which explains his problems. He would never pony up for a barrel but I had a favor to return because he purchased a special order blank (dont remember the brand) for my 50 caliber airgun and surprised me with it so I ordered a McGowan blank, 30" long 1:10 twist that took about 8 weeks to come in. Got it all set up in the lathe and indicated in perfectly.

Here is complaint number 1. Excessive run out is an understatement.
https://youtube.com/shorts/0HS3dhcvk0c? ... DnjSD4Kkal

But I got it chambered, threaded, contoured, etc.. and put on the rifle. I noticed when I was machining it that it turned incredibly soft (keep in mind)

He takes it out to the range and for the first time in 2 years the rifle shot just under an MOA at 185 yards! Big improvement. He also chronographs every round and has been using a Lab Radar that a friend let him borrow.
Problem 2: After about 20 rounds he started running into an extraction issue with no signs of over pressure anywhere excess for a swell ring where the brass sits in the back of the chamber. So he bulged the chamber in 20 rounds of his regular loads that he's been using, same velocity, etc...

The only reasoning we could come up with was the barrel being soft after I remembered how it machined in the lathe. I Google for a local place that does heat treating and ask if they test rockwell hardness and the guy says he does and that he'd do it for free. He was also only 2 miles away so my buddy took over a piece that I had parted off the blank before the other machine work. The barrel only has a hardness of 20 rockwell C and is supposed to be prehardened 28-32 😒

They sent an annealed barrel. I'm pretty sure it's too late to get my money back but this sucks. And sorry for the novel but I figured the whole story was pertinent.

Email them. You don’t know if you don’t ask

The only reason I haven't is because I got the barrel November of last year. I know they don't exactly expire but just figure that sounds shady that I'm just now getting to all of this, but who knows. Guess it doesn't hurt to try.

Here's what I see going down after you email them:
  • They ask you to send the barrel back to them for testing
*They confirm or deny the barrel's hardness is out of spec.
and the one that will tell me if the suck or not
*They confirm the barrel is bad and either A) Own it and replace the barrel, or B) Blame you for "overheating the barrel while machining it" and ruining the temper of it
I can forgive them for making mistakes. How they handle it defines my opinion of them

They'll have a hard time blaming me for overheating a section that I cut off of the end but I will be curious to see how they respond.

Yeah a 416 is a pretty large case with alot of capacity. I wouldn't want that letting go in front of my face either.

That sucks.

I have two of their barrels. One AR barrel in the wildcat 20 Practical and the other my carbon fiber 10-22 barrel. No problems with those so far. I’m curious to see how this plays out.

If the barrel is that soft, maybe it got bent before it got to you?

My thoughts on contacting them about it are;

As a gunsmith, just for the sake of safety of others, let them know about the problems. It’s possible they sent other barrels out with this issue. Whether they choose to do anything about it is on them. But at least you let them know.

Along those same lines, it’s possible this was an issue with a “lot” of barrels and has already come to their attention and they could just say, “yeah, we had an oopsie…”. I had that happen with some powdercoated 45-70 bullets that the powdercoat didn’t stick. I sent them an email with pictures of the bad powder coating. They acknowledged they had a problem and knew about it and had fixed the issue. They sent me another box of bullets for free, even though I told them I was going to shoot the “bad” bullets anyway and was just letting them know. I appreciate that kind of customer service.

As far as the timeline from getting the barrel to now, you’re a gunsmith. It’s not unusual for gunsmiths to take months to get to a project.

Also, you being a gunsmith, I would think they would be interested in doing right by you, if they have interest in keeping gunsmiths as returning customers and not turning your customers away from their products. But that’s just me.

I just used that as an example of them looking for a way to weasel out of any responsibility for their apparent mistake.
Hopefully, they'll"own it".
IMO a "good" company will own their mistake and try to make it right.
