Unexpected Yugo 8mm Mauser

Post by bullsi1911 »

Well, I wasn’t planning on this, but a buddy sent me this link earlier… and now I have an 8mm Mauser on its way to me

https://atlanticfirearms.com/yugo-zast ... r-rifle-cr

So, I know close to nothing about Yugo Mausers. Anything I should really know? Probably going to get a few boxes of commercial ammo, and reload once that runs out. Good powders I should stock up on?

Faster side of the medium burn rate spectrum.

A general rule of thumb that I use is, for a given case size, the smaller the bore, the slower the burn rate you'll need for it, the larger the bore, the faster the burn rate.
It has to do with the expansion ratio of the particular bore size.

H4895, TAC, H335 and many other powders in that same general area of the burn rate chart should do anything you need done

Surprised they are still that cheap. 20 years ago they were $79.

I have an M96 in 8mm Mauser. I like the round. Handloads for it as well.

They’re not normally that cheap any more, that’s a really good deal. Barreled action is worth more than what he paid. Good score!

Kind of my thought as well. If I don’t like how it’s configured… I have a Mauser action for dirt cheap to build something interesting with.

@bullsi1911 might want to take a look at this for a Yugo. Cheap upgrade and I’ve bought from this guy before. You get very nice wood for what you pay.

I may do that, depending on what the stock is like. The description pretty much says “they are all different. You get what you get”

Which description, the Mauser? The stock seller on eBay sends what's on the picture. At least that has been my experience with them.

the Mauser. The description is:
These Mauser rifles were originally issued to front-line military units during active service. Following their primary deployment, many were transferred to police forces and reserve military units for continued use in auxiliary roles. In these secondary capacities, the rifles were often modified by their individual users—resulting in a wide variety of configurations. No two examples are exactly the same, reflecting both the practical needs and personal preferences of their handlers. Common differences include bolt style, removal of sight hoods, missing or replaced buttplates, and significant variation in stock type and wood grain. These rifles reflect a practical, user-driven approach to maintenance and customization, with each example telling its own story of extended service and adaptation.
So, this will be like an early Christmas- no idea what I'm gonna unwrap when it gets here on Friday!

I’ll get better pics and write up done tomorrow. But all in all, I’m happy for $159.

That doesn't look half bad actually. Looks like the bolt and reciever numbers match at least. Wood and metal look decent too. Congrats.

Some more pics.

Numbers match… not sure if that matters on a Yugo M48 that was already pre-bubba’ed by the actual issuing government

The bore is full of gunk and spiderwebs. I’ll be running a brush and a bunch of solvent through it today to see how bad the corrosion is.

That’s the bastard child intermediate action that doesn’t interchange with other Mauser. I bought a barreled action with no bolt along with some other random stuff some years back. Still sitting in the safe.

Far be it from me to discourage one from spending time and money on something that’s not worth the time and money, (I’m an expert on the subject, trust me bro) but I’d shoot it and that’s it. Maybe toss a red dot on it. The rear sight base is soldered on, which sucks for the idea that I have. But I’m FULL of bad ideas.
If we can confirm that our rear sights match, I’ll have something to measure from. Maybe whip up a red dot mount.

From what I see, no one really molested this one too much. Has not been D&Td, has a very nice stock with decent grain, original sights are on, all numbers match, and all it's missing is a barrel band and a few pieces of wood to bring it back to original configuration. All of it easily available on eBay if you wanted to go that route.

I think that’s just packing grease and hopefully will just punch out with the first pass through the bore.

Oh, it is a train wreck. This is after several douses of gun scrubber and about 20 scrubs with a bore brush:
