M 1
M 1
GaRAND or Gar'and.
Which way do you pronounce it? I know Garand pronounced his last name as GERund, according to Forgotten Weapons and that's the proper name of the weapon, but I' thinrk several hundreds thousands of GI WW II and Korean War veterans GIs can't be wrong o it's GAR rand to me. Forgotten Weapons notwithstanding.

I always heard it pronounced "Guh-rand" and will likely never break myself of that habit.

This. It has served me well for decades. No need to change.shotgunshooter3 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 25, 2026 10:19 pm I always heard it pronounced "Guh-rand" and will likely never break myself of that habit.

Maybe, but hundreds of thousands of veterans and millions of Americans are wrong. (Me included)breamfisher wrote: ↑Sun Jan 25, 2026 11:57 pm Yeah, but he's Canadian.

Re: M 1
It wasn't until I called Shilen that I learned how it's pronounced. I actually adapted to the proper way, eventually.

Can I get one in .276 Pedersen to try out? .30-06 just seems so boring anymore..... I really should load up some M1 specific .30-06 and actually take mine to the range some time. Only been safe queens for something like 9ish years.

Used to say guh-rand, then learned that was incorrect, now its gare-und. No need to be wrong if the information is there.

Re: M 1
Since he was French I’m going to start pronouncing his first name John as Jean too while I’m at it…
Or maybe I don’t really care at all and will never give this another thought.

Re: M 1
I cant argue against that. They do make some very nice brass though. For a while, that was the only 6.5x55 brass I could get.

As for the name of the rifle, I'm going with what Teach said on a previous version of the forum:
There was a guy named John Garand (rhymes with errand) who designed a rifle known as the M1 Garand (rhymes with gu-rand).
I know about both facts, so I'm good.
