had my Azz kicked by wind

Post by Varmintmist »

Shot a Long range and mid range match Sat and a Sun across the course match. It blew. And blew, and blew....
Shot the 1K first and My sighters and first match got me to where I THINK I have the rifle set up right, I am going to take a 1/4in out of the stock. First match was a 184. Second was better. It was tough wind. so much 12 oclock wind that I had 1.5 MOA elevation on. Second match went pretty well.

Shot the Mid range (600) with the service rifle, First match was a 195, OK. Second was nasty. Switching wind and hard enough to make my eyes water with glasses and a hat with blinders.

Across the course, on Sunday was the first for the year. It showed and it was breezy. Offhand was better than the score showed. Didnt do to many stupid shots and had a gust or two push me out. When you are holding and there is a steady breeze, Its OK, unless the breeze stops as you are squeezing the trigger, then what you were leaning on just goes away. Earned a 5 with that.
Sitting was OK, a 100-5 and a 99-4. Wind picked up part way through the 8 round magazine.
300 rapid was 99 and a 98, OK for me
600........ wind was fishtailing from behind, flags were left and right. I started with 3/4 right on and at the end was 2 MOA left with a lot of changes in between. First string I shot a 90, with 5X. Those that competed will laugh at me. I means I shot dead on then 8's on avg. Overall worst XTC I have shot in 3 years.

Good job.
Wind humbles everyone at times.

How did your strings compare to the other competitors?

I shot a 600 yard string in Cheyenne Wyoming with my 308. The range is 6089 feet above sea level, the week before I was shooting in Laramie at 8100 ft…. Both places had crazy winds! Laramie has swirling winds in the canyon and Cheyenne, well there’s always stupid wind there!

Was a 20 round string without someone in the pits.

I wasnt last....... :)

Which actually makes me feel OK, because its Reade Range. The guy 2 points down who called wind for the rattle battle team I was on just set a national record in FL at 600 with a palma gun and most of them are older than me and forgot more about shooting when they were my age.

I was OK with the 1K scores. First was a 181, stuff wasnt right. The 190 was after some adjusting of cheek piece and things firmed up. I think I need to take a notch out of the sling and a little out of the butt, maybe 1/4, to get up on the gun a bit but I am close.

The across the course match I scored a guy who has always been at least as good or better than me, I got him by 3 pts so I wasnt alone. When you hear world class shooters come off the gun and exclaim that that wasnt fun, I dont feel that bad.
