I can see (front sight) clearly now!

Post by Japhy »

vision is my principal impediment to shooting with iron sights. I upgraded the Ruger MKII with a red dot its now a gem. The 1911s are a different story.

I am not only near sighted, but have astigmatism in my right eye. I have single vision sunglasses and non-tinted glasses night driving both with astigmatism corrected.

I checked my single vision prescription then calculated the needed correction to get tack sharp at 31 inches (distance to 1911 front sight) from 20 ft where the distance prescription is measured.
That turns out to be +1.35 diopter. Found the next lower strength reading glass +1.25, ordered some clip on flip up reading glasses. At 25 yards no trouble resolving a 1 inch contrasting circle. Since the astigmatism correction is already in the single vision glasses front sight is sharp with no ghosting, 25 yard target is not bad and my first run with the 1911 was a significant improvement.

Cost of the flip ups: 2 pair for $14!

Talk to your Optometrist about FREEFORM lenses. My eye doc is also Military and understands vision correction for shooters

Sounds like you have a good solution. Just put a dot on your 1911.

I need a good excuse to buy a benchtop mill. Bit i dont think the first project would be a 1911 slide.
